Weird facts about owls - by @bigbear

in #nature7 years ago

My mother in law always said if you hear an owl someone is dying in the family.

She definitely did not know the following facts about owls.

Did you know that some owls can swim, they are not waterproof and their feathers get heavy so they struggle to fly? They then swim to the side of the water and shake the water off them before they can fly again.

Not water proof.

Other birds can fly in the rain, as they have oil on their wings but owls do not.

Then the owl female is much bigger than the male, which is why they do not fight over female paring.

The largest owl on record is Cuba's extinct giant owl (Ornimegalonyx)

This is a replica of him modelled at the Natural Museum of History in Cuba.

Then you would think a Giraffe would have more neck vertebra but believe me an owl has 14 double the amount of humans or Giraffe’s and they can turn their necks 270 degrees. Something very few animals can do. Here is a photo of an Owl turning his neck.

There is much about owls I would like to tell you but will make it part 2.Tomorrow.

People have a lot of beliefs about owls, here we believe our local witches turn to owls to torment people at night.
The most amazing fact I love about owls is their ability to turn their neck 270° Imagine that ability in an exam hall...

this story was a hoot!

Owl eyes always look mysterious.

And the way they can turn their necks 270 degrees looks a little bit scary.

En espera de la segunda parte. Los buhos son aves maravillosas

If you caught a bird, then do not hold it in a cage, do not make it want to fly away from you, but could not. And make it so that she could fly away, but she did not want to.

Owls are wonderful nocturnal birds whose magical relationship to the subconscious confirms your mother. However, owls call too often to associate their reputation with the announcement of a person's death. Do you live in a region where owls are quite rare?

That's a super interesting finding and very cool for the owl. I wish all birds could swim when they got wet.

Very interesting facts about owls!

Owls also kill chickens at night. Be careful, if you have a secure coop you will be ok but once an owl gets a taste they will kill 1-2 a night eating the heads and a little breast meat.

Didn't know owls can swim, cute!
One more fact - there are tiny pigmy owls.
I used to photograph them:
