Elephants were hamered hard in zambia druing the previous poaching holocaust in the 1970s and 1980s. Their population plummeted from 250.000 in the 1960s fewer than 18.000 in 1989. Since then they have ribounded slowly. These days impressive gatherings can be seen again on the floodplans of the luangwa river.
