Hey... have you ever heard some Nigerian words and wondered what exactly they are about. Well even I had to be street smart to learn some of these street words. Let me share a few with you and be sure to try them out
JAPA - This means to relocate.. Abroad! Like.. out of Africa mostly. When you hear someone say Japa, UK, US, Canada etc comes to mind as these are the top countries trending for immigration in Nigeria. However the slang Japa could be used for movemnt to any country outside Nigeria and maybe West Africa. E..g... Fred wasn't in church yesterday, I heard he has Japa. This means Fred wasn't in church yesterday, I heard he has travelled abroad.
GBAS GBOS... I like to think this has 2 meanings... One is verbal conflict between 2 or more people. When a person can damage another person or throw punches through words, it can be described as Gbas gbos to signify its brutality. On the other hand it can be used to descibe actual violent acts especially in beating someone, like in a wrestling match. A pretty rough example could be... The girl destroyed her room mate during the argument, she gave it to her gbas gbos and her room mate couldnt utter a word. This implies the verbal intensity of words used against the room mate. In a violent situation, it could be used like 'The cunductor beat up the passenger seriously, heavy punches gbas gbos were flying everywhere'. Lol... I guess that's pretty clear.
JARA Ever been to a Nigerian food market? You would probably hear this word been used by sellers and buyers alike. It basically means Extra. Can be used in any context and in anyway you will typically use the English word 'Extra'. E.g Please add more rice to my plate, could simply be said as.. Please give me jara!
