In the 70's and 80's there was this big music program on Dutch national TV called "TopPop".. It is comparable with the english Top of the Pops. A (semi) live show with live performances of national and international artists.
I remember that we always were looking forward to a new episode.

The host of the show was Ad Visser, he is still a (extravagant) famous person in the Netherlands. He became very succesful trough TopPop. After TopPop he wen't to a kind of alternative direction with his "Brainsessions". This was music he composed and played to meditate on... It wasn't a big of a success.

besides the music there were also great interviews which was quite odd at that time.

The funny thing is that the last decades there (at least in Holland) aren't any show anymore with live artists (other than compilation shows of festivals). For some years ago there where this TV channels like MTV, TMF and The Box which were quite populair among the youth, but even that (at least not to my knowledge) isn't that much viewed anymore. If I see my kids, if they are watching / listening music it is YouTube or Spotify.

We have a couple of channels on cable in the US that show some live music. Nothing like a variety show that they used to have. More like a highlight of a single artist. CMT (country music television) does the "Crossroads" show that pairs a country artist with a pop/rock artist to sing each others songs. Daryl Hall from Hall & Oates has a show called Live at Daryl's house where he brings different artists over to eat and sing together. Palladia channel plays a lot of recorded concerts and stuff like that. It would be great to have a show like Top Pop or Jools Holland to highlight new artists across the globe.

Sadly, MTV is mostly about pregnant teens these days and VH1 mostly shows movies. The only reason I know about Jools Holland is because I watched him on Paladia or Axis once. The Live at Daryl's House show is actually very interesting and I never realized how talented he is beyond the typical Hall & Oates hits
