Silent Winds - Funk D-Vice (Original Song )

in #music7 years ago (edited)

Hello steemit!

I wanted to try the DSound App and start sharing with you some original music , and some of it's background story .

This song is a special one for me because it's my first ''full blown production'' , I composed the music , arranged it , directed the recording sessions , played in it and edited it , on my own time and money . It was a nice learning experience , as i learned through the mistakes I made along the way , and was able to achieve better results on later productions.

So , Funk D-Vice was a band that I had with some friends when I was a music student in EMBA ( Buenos Aires Music School ) , it was an excuse to play our own compositions and just jam and have fun . We did a couple demos , played a few venues and such . When we graduated the band pretty much disbanded and each one of us went on separate directions , some of us moved back to our cities (since the keyboard player , Pablo , was from Colombia and I moved back to Ecuador ) .

Couple years later we organized a trip together that included Ecuador and Colombia, so I thought that would be a perfect excuse to get together and record something . So I started working on the music of this particular song . Then i sent the demo track to Carla , on of the singers, to have her write the lyrics.

The challenge in this particular production was that no one would be travelling with their instruments! , So I had to borrow or rent all the equipment they would use!

So first I rented a studio for the Vocals to sing over the programmed drums , bass and some guide guitars ( bad idea ) ,
Carla Vera and Sol Burgos did a great job anyway .

(Pablo San Juan (r) and our engineer for the day Fabricio ''LinQin'' Burgos at Borkis Entertainment , Guayaquil - Ecuador )

By the time of the recording I had almost no idea of mics and pro audio , all I remember is that the vocals were recorded through an AKG-414 ( don't know the year , exact model or anything , complete newbie by that time )

Then came the drum session ,we went to a different studio, sent both the singers to some friend's pool and got into action.
Julian Piterman did some amazing takes , the drums ended up sounding amazing (i did mess them up a little in the editing and mixing ... sorry Julian... haha they sounded better in the raw takes )

(Julian Piterman setting up drums at JAC MUSIC , Guayaquil - Ecuador )

I have NO IDEA what gear was used in this session , now i never miss these details.

Once i had all the takes , i put them in an old macbook and started editing in Logic as we started travelling up to Colombia , I edited everything using headphones while on buses , cars , living rooms and any place we crashed in .

I tracked my guitars and bass last , i remember using a little Tubemeister head from Hughes & Kettner , using my trusty strat , and bass was a borrowed 5-string Jazz Bass.

I didn't nail such very good tones on guitar and/or bass , but this was more of a learning experience to me :)

(recording direct through the tubemeister , not for this particular session)

Thanks for reading , I hope you enjoyed the post!
