During my internship today, I had my 8th session with one of my clients, and it was a bit of a break through. I heard him express himself through improvisational rap. This client often raps and it can be a little all over the place and jumbled, but this time it was very clear and structured. He even expressed personal things about himself that happened in his past. Rather than rapping about things only on the surface, he reflected inward and was able to rap about things with heavy substance. I think he was able to open up because I suggested he approach writing the rap differently today. What we have been doing is, I create an accompaniment pattern on the guitar, and he just freestyles over it. Today, I had the idea to challenge him a little bit. So, I suggested we discuss themes of what the song could potentially be about first, and then freestyle. What he came up with was a theme of struggle, and how struggling with mental illness has effected his life. As we discussed his struggle and how he has dealt with it, he had my support and verification of his feelings. When he began rapping this time, it was astonishing. It was the best I had ever heard him rap. His tempo was slow, and he was taking his time, while also creating very intricate and deep lyrics, that were totally improvised. When he was done rapping, he was even shocked at himself and said "wow that was really good right?" and I said of course, keep up the good work you're getting better everyday. Seeing his progression is absolutely amazing. When I first started working with this client he seemed to rap about things that were very on the surface, and things he is familiar with, like rappers he likes. As I got to work with him more, he slowly began to open up and share more about himself. Watching him go from not writing all that much, to posting videos on Instagram and writing everyday, is incredible. I heard him rap today and open up and express himself in a way that impressed everyone, and he even impressed himself. It was wonderful to see him so proud of himself. This has been my first real time working with someone and ever so slightly seeing their progression. It feels spectacular to be able to work with people this way, and it is extremely very rewarding.

Very therapeutic, and the chance to move around some different parts of the mind. Powerful.
