The Cramps – “Route 66”

This rendition of “Route 66”  is pretty much what we’d expect from The Cramps. 

Expect the Unexpected

Nat King Cole’s original gave us what we’d expect from a 1940s R&B version. The Stones and Them gave us what we’d expect from 1960s rock’n’roll versions. (see links below)

On this version, The Cramps gave us the unexpected – a song that is steamy ‘n’ eerie in some sections, and rough ‘n’ raunchy in others.   _{(Image source)}

The Cramps 

The Cramps were a US band that was labelled variously as a “punk”  band, a “blues”  band, a “garage punk”  band, a “rockabilly”  band, and a “psychobilly”  band.  

Succeed or Jump

The band was led by the husband-wife duo of Lux Interior (lead singer; real name Erick Lee Purkhiser) and Poison Ivy (guitarist; real name Kristy Wallace).    

After Lux and Poison formed the band, they reportedly made a sucide pact, vowing that if the band had not succeeded within a certain time frame, the 2 of them would jump off the Empire State Building. Thankfully, they never did jump.    

At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, there is a shattered head of bass drum, which was apparently destroyed when Lux smashed his head through it during a show.   _{(Image source)}
