The original "Freestyler" song by Bomfunk MC's was recorder in 1999. So as the video. After 20 years one of the telecommunications company (YUGO) recorded a new video for the same song and uploaded it to YouTube.
"Freestyler" is an iconic electro song. Some of us may easily connect it to youth's memories. Well at least those that were in a circle of people that put some interest in electronic/popular music. The video was played quite often on popular music channels like VIVA or MTV. The plot takes us to the world where every person is to some degree representative of electro subculture. The main character travels the urban area (starting at the metro station) with the ability to play, pause and rewind in both directions people's movement. This magical power quickly drains out though and a character rewinds himself to the point where whole video started just like it was a daydream of his.
The new video recorded in 2019 is in fact a kind of advertisement although the person watching it is not confronted with the company or any kind of product until the last scene of the video which makes it quite pleasant to watch (just like a regular music video). The music is the same as in original. Video also reuses the same concept but with some changes. The main character is a girl now, the music is being played on the smartphone and the abilities she gained is not only pausing and rewinding but also swiping persons, changing orientation of gravity or making people fall down or dance in worrisome way. The people she meets on her way are no longer a representatives of any subculture but regular people although she seems to be observed by the Bomfunk MC's artists all the time (the same that were present in the original video as well).
What I did like in the new video is it's quality. It's not just a commercial, it's really well done. It's fun to watch and it contains many tributes to old memories.
What I did not like is that it lost it's whole "underground's feeling". It starts from a regular drunk guy in a metro station instead of a kind of dancer-fighter (a dancer that likes to compete in dancing abilities face to face on the disco - such things were popular those old days ;) ). It also continues just though regular people. The main character seems to please herself with making them move and look awkward and maybe even hurting them. That wasn't the impression you get from the old video.
Anyway it's still worth watching in my opinion.
What is your opinion? Which video is better? Let me know in the comments! :)
I prefer the retro version;) Anyway - I love "Freestyler"! It's still full energetic, after all these years!
I totally agree to your statement
But I personally find the new Version better 😅
