I came late to Hip Hop….. but I am here now….

in #music7 years ago

When I was in my teens, in the 70's, one day, I just turned away from Rock and Roll music and pretty much listened to only Soul music as it was called then, now R&B, Funk and Disco. I was a skinny blond hair blue eyed girl who pretty much did what I wanted, not really much of a follower.

I loved to dance, and the drinking age in Florida at that time was 18 (That didn't last long) and I loved going to the clubs. LOL I lived in Orlando, FL.

I REALLY loved Funk music. I loved Parliament and the Funkadelics, Bootsy Collins, Jimmy Castor Bunch, Mass Production, Brick, Slave, etc. I liked all of the dance groups too, like Heatwave, Kool and the Gang, Rick James, Brothers Johnson to name a few. I have a pretty good bit of knowledge of songs, artists and went to quite a few concerts back then.

As my son started listening to music during his middle school years he listened to Hip Hop, and Rap like all of his friends. Amazingly and unfortunately in his mind, even though I didn’t know the words to the rap lyrics, I knew the lyrics to the main chorus. I would sing along sometimes in front of his friends. To my amusement, it used to drive him crazy. Here he was supposedly listening to music totally different from his parents, yet his Mom knew the words to his music. Not good. Sometimes I would even dance in front of his friends. OMG!! I can say that he did not grow up to be scarred by this behavior on my part. At least I don’t think so. Hmmmm. Here is a picture of him and some of his artwork.

My music tastes expanded over the years, I started listening to Celtic and Latin music. I even started to listen to some Classic Rock. Realized that I really like Steely Dan, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers and a few others. Still wasn’t into Hip Hop or much of the popular music.

That is until last year. I met someone who really caught my attention and woke my imagination up. WOOHOO!! Yes, he is younger than me. Whatever. So be it. Different story.

Without going into everything, I realized that I had lost touch with the vibration and energy of so much that was going on around me. I had become boring to myself. I had been pretty much going through the motions of work, going home, watching TV, and not growing as a human being.

With that said, one aspect of my life that changed was that I was introduced to current day Hip Hop music and fashion, sometimes with historical background on many of the artist, and the meaning of the lyrics. I learned quite a bit of new to me slang.

Got schooled on the world of sneakers. OMG! I had no idea.

It really entertains my new friends when I quote a lyric from a current Hip Hop song. Some of the lyrics are just crazy. It makes me laugh too since now I am a blond haired, blue eyed, white woman in her 50s saying it. I am not the normal demographic. I can definitely laugh at myself, and do so quite a bit. I even have a new nickname Hip Hop Kim. Go figure.
Now, just wait until I get the dance moves down and go to the club.

It will be Lit!!! I will probably have to be lit with a few drinks before I break that out in public. Doesn't mean it won't happen. Just saying. You are warned!

The music is fun, but it's in the chicken coop ,,,

Haha that is awesome! You're never too old to experience new things. One mistake a lot of people make is getting caught into a tunnel vision of their current views and interests. Life becomes WAY more exciting when you step out of the box and out of your comfort zone. Often times you will be surprised with what you might discover.

Thanks. You are right. It is way more interesting. Fear is no reason to not try something new.

Hip hop makes the world go 'round!

Great article about music and life! I love the pictures and your sons art!
That's awesome about the music you love, keep posting!

Thanks so much. I really believe you have to move forward in life or it passed you by.
I learn something new everyday,

Here's a favorite quote of mine...music is amazing.....

"One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain."
~Bob Marley
