TIL At the height of the siege of Sarajevo in 1994, Iron Maiden's frontman Bruce Dickinson and his band decided to smuggle themselves into the city and give a concert despite constant shelling and sniper-fire. When their arranged UN heli-transport bailed, they hitched a hike in the back of a truck.
After the heli-transport couldn't pick them them up in Split (Croatia) for unknown reasons, they passed a convoy of traveling artists and performers called the Serious Road Trip (here's more pictures for those interested). These guys apparently go around war zones and destabilized regions, and try to brighten up people's day. They were heading for Sarajevo, so they hitched a hike in the back of a truck with Roadrunner cartoon paintings on the side. Bruce said the thing basically screamed "shoot me, blow me up", and I gotta say he's right. Just look at that fucking thing. Imagine driving a convoy of those past front lines.
Also, Sarajevo only had power once in a while, so nobody was sure if the whole thing was gonna work out at all. And on top of that; they had to keep the concert a secret up until something like 4 hours prior to the show so the Serbs that were besieging the city wouldn't start shelling the venue.
