Devin Townsend is a Canadian songwriter, vocalist, guitarist and record producer.
He sang the lead vocals on the Sex & Religion album by famous guitarist Steve Vai. Since then he has collaborated with many more other musicians and lead his own projects, namely, Strapping Young Lad, The Devin Townsend Band, Devin Townsend Project, and Casualties of Cool.
His music has been described at times as ambient or electronic, and some other times as new-age, but could more generally be categorized as heavy metal, progressive (metal), and (hard) rock.
He's got a theatrical personality, adds a lot of humor to the high-quality music he produces, and looks like never taking himself too seriously.
One thing I learned researching for this post, is that his style has been compared to Frank Zappa and Phil Spector. The latter which I had never heard the name before. The comparison lies in that all three of them have been known to use a music production formula call the Wall of Sound. Another name for it is the Spector Sound where duplicating the recording part for an instrument can result in a dense sound overcoming the poorest of playing material.
Heavy multitracked layering has become a trademark for Devin Townsend along with his versatile vocal delivering.
The only CD I got in my possession by Devin Townsend is The Retinal Circus, a live album.
I bought it after I had discovered him while surfing on YouTube. His music is not the only one I got acquainted with from spending long hours jumping from one suggested video to the other. If you don't what it sounds like, here is your chance to hear it, and who knows, maybe to love it too.

I usually don't mind cheesy at all and I generally don't even mind weird and strange, but I guess his madness is simply not on my wavelength (for lack of a better term). After all, music is art and it's all totally subjective.
But I certainly respect the guy immensely and like him quite a lot too.
Well put, you're totally right about the subjectivity regarding appreciation of music and art in general. And I would even add that this subjective appreciation is sometimes hard to put into words. Sometimes we simply like it or we don't, it either touches a chord with us or it doesn't.

Hello & Cheers!! I'm a content detection and information bot. You are receiving this reply because a short link or links have been detected in your post/comment. The purpose of this message is to inform your readers and yourself about the use of and dangers of short links.
To the readers of the post: Short links are provided by url shortening services. The short links they provide can be useful in some cases. Generally their use is benign. But as with all useful tools there are dangers. Short links can be used to hide all sorts of things. Quite frequently they are used to hide referral links for instance. While not dangerous this can be deceptive. They can also be used to hide dangerous links such as links to phishing sites, sites loaded with malware, scam sites, etc. You should always be extremely cautious before clicking on one. If you don't know and trust the poster don't click. Even if you do you should still be cautious and wary of any site you are sent to. It's always better to visit the site directly and not through a short link.
To the author of the post: While short links may be useful on some sites they are not needed on steemit. You can use markdown to format your links such as this link to steemit. It's as simple as [steemit](https://steemit.com) Unlike short links this allows the reader to see where they are going by simply hovering over the link before they click on it.

Cool post, Dev is awesome! My favourite album by him would be 'Ziltoid The Omniscient'.
Thanks for the input, I'm not familiar with the albums per se. Next time I want to get my hands on a CD, this one shall be at the top of my list. :-)
Ziltoid Monologue
Devin is a bit too weird for my taste, but still quite cool! I've also had the chance to catch The Devin Townsend Project live a few times :)
I guess to each his own, but I totally get what you're saying. His style is quite cheesy at times. lol
Lucky you! ;-)
