Music for the Masses: Depeche Mode's 2nd best album?

in #music7 years ago (edited)

They were considerably darker on this album than most of their others and i think that is best. While most people didn't know this album even happened, it was forced upon me by a great friend, and I'm happy that happened :)

depeche-mode-head.jpg I wonder if these hairstyles will come back into fashion?

While Depeche Mode's more happy songs are also good for different reasons, i really feel as though they found their true calling in the more morose musical mixes that began to take hold during this album and remains to this day.

Released a mere 3 years before their breakthrough album "Violator," "Music for the Masses" did reasonably well in the USA with a million units sold. It did quite well in Europe, reaching number 10 on the U.K. charts and number 1 in Spain (it reached number 44 in Poland.) how do you feel about grapefruit? I don't care for it unless it is the pink ones.

This is some of their best work, particularly the songs "Little 15", "Behind the Wheel", and "Sacred."

Here's a taste

some of the other videos are a bit creepy as they seem to be stalking hot ladies in "Strangelove" and of course "Little 15" can easily be interpreted to mean something very inappropriate.

See if you like it... This was one of the most influential albums of my childhood and I have fond memories

Sort:

I bought this album used in mid 90’s and gave it away some time later. I remember “To Have And To Hold” best. Dark but not depressing. Not as depressing, in the least, as how much sugar you have to sprinkle on white grapefruit to get that stuff down the hatch. Tart..TART!!! No mommy. Too sour :-/

After listening to hours of Depeche Mode I would always slap in some Duran Duran (Yes..On Tape) to lighten the mood again before socializing in the least. Either that or go straight to bed in order to process those deep thoughts thouroughly enough. (Example listen to the track “Pimpf” then tell me yourr mind is somewhere real) That album was under appreciated in my young mind.

Sorry I gave it away. What did I do?! What have I done!!?? My punishment is grapefruit.

another great response from you. No grapefruit in Thailand i'm afraid. I wonder why that is? We got oranges coming out of our ears. Perhaps there is a different growing process.

I would imagine that those songs are easy enough to find on the interwebs if you simply must have them back. D-tube it! as i am sure you know.

I could find it there, but then how would I play it in my CD player (which overheats at about track 7..forgot to mention that..guess I’ll have to break out my Walkman). 🤔Why no grapefruit in Thailand? The world may never know. Who cares as long as we have our Rhubarb.

as long as you only ever play albums by Helmet you will never have an overheating issue.

BAHahahahaha. Sound advice. Punt intended.

I really like how you express your musical tastes and I am even amused by some of your opinions about artists. I will compare this video with the others to see that change to creepy, hahaha. It is exciting to hear songs that have marked our lives or that bring us memories, I understand you.

hey! I'm glad you like it! thanks for reading. I'm certain i will write more in the future. :)

And now you share it with us, everything becomes good for others. I know that Clarke was replaced by Alan Wilder. The album Music for the Masses was my favorite. Age of electronic rock and excesses. Depeche Mode is the most popular electronic band that the world has ever known.

I think you know this band pretty well :)

It seems you have dedicated May Day to the remembrance of Depeche Mode. Indeed, the legendary band deserve the honour. They have served several generations with good music. No wonder you're feeling nolstagic about them today. Happy May by the way.

Another album i was yet to hear, just downloaded "strange love" and "the things you said" from youtube, fingers crossed they may be great compositions to listen to and with your help i would have found new music to listen to for this week. I will let you know my analysis after listening to the songs though. Grapefruit juice is a popular one in Ghana, come in second after the orange flavour and i love it but i prefer actual grapefruit to the juice though, is rather quite unfortunate that it tends to be more expensive than the juice.

Behind The Wheel is one of the songs that really holds up well for me. Still sounds fresh in a DJ set and there are plenty of good remixes of it that sound modern. Honestly, one of the reasons I like this album so much is due to the amount of good remixes that came off of it that hit me at the right time when I was coming into my own musically. The Ulrich Schnauss remix of Little 15 is great and I really like the Blind remix of Strangelove. Also, Never Let Me Down is up there in my top 5 songs by them. Great post.

Holy cow! i LOVE this album and the band! lol
Strangelove is my fav EVER DM tune. That and In Your Room.

Strangelove!

For the few years I have lived, I believe FASHION is cyclical i nature

what goes around will go round and then come around

Those hairstyles will come around but I don't think its gonna be soon, or maybe I could revive it. Hahahaha

When I saw grapefruit, I was like, great!, now you have mentioned something I do not feel abstract about like the dragonfruit.
I love grapes, its sour taste kind of attracts me.
I didn't know it had type though I just eat the one I see off my neighbours garden.
If there are varieties I wont mind trying them out, I think you should too @gooddream, Common

Everyone is "behind the wheel" in one way or the other. Just make sure you are driving the right stuff

Thanks @gooddream for sharing all this music stuff, You have actually exposed me to some new stuff this past days. I think am now curious like @emmakkayluv, do you do music? ... Smiles

Good post @gooddream

Please vote me back ya...

yaa i agree, best album

Depeche Mode's never get to hear you I'll take a look at your songs to see how good they are?

I asked a question the other time if you sing at all? Your passion for music is growing wired as far as I'm concerned, I don't know how you dedicate so much time to analyze music like this, it's is strange to me just like the "strangelove".... Lol.
I've never seen people with such passion for music before.

Those hairstyles are super good for their time, if one should try them now, instead of ladies to be stalked with you in "strangelove" they would be running from you in strange disbelief..... Smile

Well done boss! 😍😍😍😍

Buen post, saludos.

Good taste with that song, despite being released a few years ago it turns out to be quite nice for this time, maybe it would have been some of my favorites in my childhood too bad, but if I'm honest today I've heard it several times . I hope more musical recommendations ;).

Well ... it's not my style. But this is pretty cool. I follow u!

Hey... can u upvote my post? Im new here :)
