The Good. The Bad. The Mumble: Moonlight Rappers.

I'd like to start off by saying that this is not a post bashing trap music or mumble rappers. I've always maintained that all music is an art form and trap music is no different, it's just something that's not for everyone.

I'm no hip-hop purist, I'm not even someone who was raised on so called "real" hip-hop. My longstanding love for a musical genre has and will always be Rock. Due to my synesthesia however, I'm capable of enjoying a wide variety of genres and most of their respective sub-genres.

I've been going to clubs and parties a lot lately, finally coming out of my bubble so to speak. The one thing I've learned is that all the music played during hip-hop sets is exclusively trap music by artists like Travis Scott, 21 Savage, Migos... etc. You're never going to hear Immortal Technique's Dance With the Devil in the club, unless someone like a Black Coffee adds he's production to it.

The majority of hip-hop sets include the following words: "If Young Metro Don't Trust You, I'm Go'n Shoot You"

I actually have zero problem with hearing that line and even though I can't relate to 99% of the braggadocio, it doesn't mean I can't enjoy the crisp production. There is however the bad kind of mumble rap. I'm talking about the Lil Yatchy's and Kodak Black's of this world. This is not to chastise them, but Tunnel Vision caused a sever nosebleed when I first heard it, no joke.

There are artists who make trap music enjoyable and no one does it better, in my opinion, than Travis Scott. I feel as though he took something that Future (I think) kinda invented and took it to new heights. He has fully grasped the balance of making trap music accessible and enjoyable for both commercial music consumers and the ones that would rather listen to J. Cole or those that are even more "purer" and prefer the sounds of a Big L.

My musical hero, Kurt Cobain said that people don't care about the words and that they don't matter and mumble rappers have an excellent understanding of that. I've seen some of them in interviews and some of them are actually influenced by Nirvana. This is not to justify their music, but I can see where they're coming from.

The common denominator when speaking of their influences is none other than Lil Wayne. He's solely responsible for the wave of new artists we currently have flooding the music scene with the music that makes millions. I'm talking about Young Thug, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage... etc. You ask any of them who inspired them and Wayne's name will be brought up.

I don't know whether mumble rap and trap music have a shelf life, but what I do know is that it's here now and it'll be here for quite a long time. We might as well make ourselves comfortable and strap ourselves in for one hell of a turn-up ride.
