Can a video be driven by intention and spirit?
We set out set out with the simple mission of hanging out for the day and recording some footage for a song that I had recorded.
We had an iPhone 7, our clothes and any "props" that were already in the trunks of our collective cars.
A time of intention setting and meditation. This is how we set the stage for the shoot. From our collective meditation we were off to the races. When I say spirit wrote the video, I mean we really had to relinquish control even from the first location. We had an idea of a space to shoot video that was located at Spirit Rock in CA. When we arrived to the location we found that it was bustling with people from a conference that was going on. We made due with the rest of the surroundings that we had and the limited time on the clock before sunset.
The next day we did one hillside shot in LA with my guitar. It felt like all of the video that was shot ultimately ended up telling the story of how we actually went about making the video itself. A reminder to me to set my intention and walk forward in the world doing my personal work while I let the universe hang the stars in the sky.
What does the video say to you?
The audio for Til Kingdom Come was recorded in Nashville, TN with the help of Tawney Dolley on background vocals, Natalie Murphy on fiddle, engineer/produced by Ray Stephenson and mixed by Bill McDermott at Dog Den Studios. The song can be found on Carl John's debut album The Journey hOMe.
Directed by Orrin Pratt, the video was shot entirely on the iPhone 7 and features appearances by Ayo Robinson. Filmed in a few hours using Spirit Rock and the cliffs of Angels Gate as the setting, the story board was guided by spirit as the shooting took place.
