There are different kinds of musical sounds cutting across different countries in Africa, some of these sounds have definitely propagated African sound to the world.
The major artistes or musicians responsible for this propagation are mostly from Nigeria and South Africa, which makes these two countries the major influencers in the transportation of African music to the world. We’ve had African artistes win Grammy awards with massive recognition on the international scene. In the 90’s and modern-day music, SouthAfrica and Nigeria are still the major pushers of African music to the world. Let’s take a look at some of the legends who helped achieve this.
Miriam Mkeba who is popularly known as “MAMA AFRICA” was a Grammy winner and she was recognized all over the world for her unique sound and stage performances which was second to none. She is obviously the best female artiste to come out of Africa. She is a native of South-Africa. 
King Sunny Ade was popularly known for his unique style of music which is Juju music which was a popular form of music in Nigeria in the 80s.
His band called King Sunny Ade and His African Beats toured Africa and gained popularity in the US and Europe.
Lucky Dube was a south-African reggae musician who is also known as the father of African Reggae music, he toured the world with his band and got global recognition.
LadySmith Black Mambazo are a male Grammy Award winning male group from South Africa that sing the vocal style of isicathamiya & mbube. This group propelled south-Africa’s culture to the world with their style of music.
This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the “GREATEST LIVING AFRICAN DIVA” Angelique Kodjo who is a two-time Grammy award winner, she earned the title GREATEST LIVING AFRICAN DIVA through her diverse music video and lyrical content. She hails from Benin republic.
These were musicians that took African music worldwide in the 80s and 90s.
In modern day music, it’s still Nigerian and South-African artistes that have been making waves globally. We have the likes of Davido and Wizkid from Nigeria, both signed to Sony Music Worldwide and a young rapper from SouthAfrica Nasty-C. He’s also signed to universal music records.
These three artistes have many international collaborations to their names as well as successful world tours.
