The moonwalk danceThe moonwalk is a dance move in which the dancer moves backwards while seemingly walking forwards.[1] A popping move, it became popular around the world after Michael Jackson performed the dance move during a performance of "Billie Jean" on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever on March 25, 1983. This special was broadcast May 16, 1983.[2] It subsequently became his signature moveSource

Technique
illusion is involved in creating the appearance of the dancer gliding backwards. Initially, the front foot is held flat on the ground, while the back foot is in a tiptoe position. The flat front foot remains on the ground but is slid lightly and smoothly backward past the tip-toe back foot. What is now the front foot is lowered flat, while the back foot is raised into the tiptoe position. These steps are repeated over and over creating the illusion that the dancer is being pulled backwards by an unseen force while trying to walk forward. Variations of this move allow moonwalking to appear to glide forward, sideways, or even in a circle. Source
The shoes worn by Michael Jackson when he first showed off his now famous moonwalk are to be sold at auction.
The black loafers bear the label "Michael #2" and were used in 1983 for the Motown 25 television special rehearsal with his hit Billie Jean. Auction house GWS Auctions said: "Photos found in archives show Michael Jackson wearing them during the rehearsal. "These loafers have never been offered at auction, and are the first pair of Motown 25 shoes that have ever been made available to the public as, to our knowledge, no other pair has surfaced in over 35 years. "It is possible that Michael also wore these shoes during his performance on the special, as according to the letter of authenticity he referred to this pair as his 'magic shoes' and a pair of performance shoes has never surfaced." The moonwalk became Jackson's signature move and many stars and fans tried to replicate it. The shoes are accompanied by a letter of authenticity from choreographer and dancer Lester Wilson, who says he was given the shoes by Jackson in his dressing room after rehearsing with his brothers for the special.
