Last night, I went to a great gig in my hometown. Two bands were playing and it was all part of a two day music festival called "Invasion From The East". Its a small festival really, but I had a lot of fun nevertheless. Bands that played are Kymera from Osjek, Croatia, and The Bloody Earth from my hometown Niš, Serbia. The show was great, and both, Kymera and The Bloody Earth were awesome. Kymera is death metal band, but not the usual kind. Its a mashup of extreme metal genres, and they somehow make a perfect sense. It was so fun, not so much for our necks though.
Band that I want to talk about more in depth here is, The Bloody Earth. They are a first doom metal band formed in Serbia, and at that, first funeral doom band formed in this country.
About them:
The Bloody Earth are unique case in Serbian music scene, not just because their genre, but for their biography. They formed in 1995, in Niš, and are, the pioneers of the national death doom scene. In the first period of the band, The Bloody Earth made an album called "Requiem Of Weeping Souls", that was released in 1996 by Butcher Sound, and was reissued by Buffalo Revenge in 2003. They initially split, in 1998, and some members went on to another band called, Duh Predaka.
With album "Inevitable", The Bloody Earth continued where they stopped two decades ago. They signed with new, independent label, Miner Records. The line up consist of, Goran Mladenović Zizi and Strahinja Đorđević on guitars, Vladan Kitanović on drums, Marko Tričković on bass and vocals, and Nikola Zlatković on organ and keybords.
Basically, the band remained faithful to its doom/death roots when the sound is in question. Although it is a good thing that the Serbian scene has received such a release, it is a pity that this album did not see the light of day in some of the countries of northern or western Europe.
The gloomy atmosphere, which depicts the album "Inevitable", will conquer the hearts even of those hardcore doomers. However, listeners unaccustomed to this kind of "Inevitable" sound, can find this to be difficult to listen to. The entire world was curled up into darkness in less than an hour on this record. Harmoniously fitted parts of the organ, guitars and drums, that give us the balanced strength and atmosphere, are rounded up by growling vocals. Person that's behind Associated Act studies in Niš, Vladimir Milosavljević, was responsible for production on this album, and he did it masterfully.
When you think about the live performance of a funeral doom band, you just can't imagine how it would be like, unless you go to see it for yourself. I, for starters, didn't think that funeral doom is for live gigs, until I heard this band. I fell in love with the atmosphere, and the whole ceremony of performing this genre. There are rare occasions where I say that
the live performance is better than listening to a CD, and in this case, it was. I can't recommend this band enough. If you are a fan of doom, or funeral doom go and check them out, you wont regret it! \m/
