(minor spoilers)
Why the fuck should you watch “I Am Mother”?
• You are a mother and understand how pesky and ungrateful children can be in their teens.
• You like pure science fiction movies in which the emphasis is on an idea and not the explosions.
• You were disappointed in the new Terminator movie and want to see a robot-movie that feels real.
• You want to get some nice tips for rising your child.
“I Am Mother” is a low budget (5 million USD) Netflix science fiction movie. It’s relatively well made, well acted and quite thrilling. But it is definitely not an easy watch to numb your brain after dodging bankrupt for another day in the office.
There are three main characters: Mother (voice: Rose Byrne), Daughter (Clara Rugaard) and Woman (Hilary Swank). Mother is a robot with an artificial intelligence and it’s job is to make babies and grow them. No, it’s not like a weird Japanese adult movie with robots making babies. Mother has the lab with human embryos and it’s job is to repopulate Earth after any disaster should hit the world and humans die. Thankfully this event takes place right at the start of the movie, otherwise it would be a rather dull film.
Daughter has lived in the laboratory-bunker with Mother for years and they get along quite well. She has never seen anyone besides Mother nor gone out of that bunker. But then one day everything changes - The Woman appears at the bunker’s door and bleeds all over the place. Then questions start to rise, lies start to reveal and new lies are being told.
I am not going to spoil the second part of the movie, but I have to say it changes a tone a little. It starts with quite a claustrophobic thriller, but loses that towards the end. Overall it’s a good watch for all the science fiction lovers. Action lovers should probably go and watch something else.
Like any good science fiction movie or a book, this movie also rises some interesting questions about humanity and what is right or wrong. If you sleep too well and want to keep yourself up tonight thinking about philosophical questions, then here’s one for you: Would you kill 1 innocent person if that saves 5 random people who would otherwise die? …it got dark, I know. So, good night!
Why the fuck you shouldn’t watch “I Am Mother”?
• You like humor and fun movies. There’s literally no humor in this movie.
• You lose your focus when things take longer than 3 minutes.
• You have seen the trailer – knowing any detail beforehand really ruins it a bit. Well damn, if you have reached this far with your reading then nothing can be saved anymore.
• You are a father and think …is the sequel will be titled “I Am Father”? No. Probably “The Second Mother” or something, if you count in the trend with creativeness regarding sequels usually.
