Deadpool and Cable creator Rob Liefeld compares Deadpool 2 to Aliens as a bigger, action heavy sequel. Fox as a studio may have their future in question, but one property that is safe no matter what is Deadpool. Ryan Reynolds spent years getting a solo movie for the character off the ground and was ultimately reward with Deadpool‘s runaway success in theaters. The upcoming sequel will attempt to recapture the magic of the first movie, while expanding its world in the process. Part of that growth will include the introduction of Josh Brolin as Cable, as well as Zazie Beetz as Domino.
While the initial teaser for Deadpool 2 didn’t offer up much, the newly released Deadpool, Meet Cable trailer for the film goes all in, showcasing the aforementioned time traveling mutant’s impressive fighting style in the process. Deadpool 2 is facing even higher expectations than its predecessor did, but the man responsible for the creation of many of its characters is already likening it to one of the most highly regarded sequels ever.
While the tones of those franchises don’t necessarily match up, the idea that Deadpool 2 is following the Aliens blueprint makes sense. Just like Alien, Deadpool is largely focused on a single character (Wade Wilson) and not a group dynamic. James Cameron took what Ridley Scott established with Alien and opened up its world with Aliens, much like Deadpool 2 director David Leitch aims to do now that he’s taken over from Deadpool helmsman Tim Miller.
Speaking of Leitch helming the sequel, going more of an action route suits his skills more. Reynolds is going to be able to pull jokes out of any situation to keep the Merc with a Mouth’s humor, but Leitch has already proven his ability to deliver memorable action scenes with his efforts on the films John Wick and Atomic Blonde. With Cable, Domino, and possibly an early version of X-Force appearing in the Deadpool sequel, the film’s action set pieces will also be able to draw on some pretty cool mutant super-powers.
For some people, Aliens not only turned the Alien franchise into an action-driven one, it even managed to surpass the quality of its predecessor. It will be difficult (but not impossible) for Deadpool 2 to do the same, but it should have every opportunity to do so.
