So I was entertained, but the film to me seemed more a proof of concept of things we could see in future star wars movies
) Gritty Space station spy action (Check)
) Gritty occupied cities in space middle east (with the Jedi as Space Islam/Space East Asian religion) (Check)
) Gritty war story (Check)
) Gritty Space politics story (Check)
) Byzantine political story (Check)
However none of those stories (told in a single movie) were told in a compelling way that was also Star Wars. What the movie was sold on (at the end of the day) that allowed the experiments to work was “Remember all the stuff you liked in Star Wars? Well here it is.”
I was entertained by the action, and I was entertained by what they were trying to do…but the whole package was disappointing
