Hidden Gems- 5 movies to get you through the SAG strike

in #movieslast year

As the entertainment industry faces a period of uncertainty during the SAG strike, what better time to explore the world of hidden gem movies that often slip through the cracks of mainstream attention? While the strike may have temporarily halted the production of new blockbuster films, it has also provided a unique opportunity to delve into the lesser-known, yet incredibly captivating, movies that have been waiting in the wings for your discovery. In no particular order here are 5 of my favorites

1.) Hit and Run (2012) The movie follows the story of a former getaway driver (played by Dax Shepard) who risks his Witness Protection Plan identity to help his girlfriend (played by Kristen Bell) get to Los Angeles. Their journey becomes a high-speed adventure filled with car chases, hidden secrets, and comedy, as they evade both federal agents and the criminals he testified against. It's a fast-paced, action-packed, and humor-filled film that explores themes of love, loyalty, and the consequences of one's past actions. You can find Hit and Run streaming on HBO Max

2.) Leaves of Grass (2009) The film centers on two identical twin brothers, both portrayed by Edward Norton. One brother is a successful Ivy League professor, while the other is a small-time marijuana grower in Oklahoma. When the professor is lured back to his hometown by a bizarre criminal scheme, the two brothers are forced to confront their differences and the complexities of their relationship. The film explores themes of identity, family, and the clash of intellectualism with rural culture, all within the backdrop of a darkly comedic and thought-provoking narrative. You can stream Leaves of Grass on Peakcock, Crackle and Freeverse

3.) Poolhall Junkies (2002) This film delves into the underground world of pool hustling. The story follows Johnny (played by Mars Callahan), a talented pool player who leaves behind his life as a hustler. However, he is drawn back into the high-stakes world of billiards when his younger brother gets involved with a dangerous hustler. Johnny must use his exceptional pool skills to protect his brother and outsmart his ruthless rival while dealing with personal dilemmas and moral conflicts. The film explores themes of redemption, loyalty, and the allure of the underground pool culture. This is personally my favorite movie but I also grew up playing pool and even went to Junior Nationals. You can stream Poolhall Junkies on Starz or Youtube

4.) Soul Men (2008) This comedy stars Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac as two estranged backup soul singers who reunite to perform at a memorial concert for their former band's lead singer. The film explores their comedic and heartfelt journey as they confront their past and attempt to recapture their musical magic. This was Bernie Macs last big performance and as one of my favorite comedians I couldn't make this list without this movie. You can find Soul Men on Freeverse and the Roku channel

5.) Old Henry (2021) The movie tells the story of a quiet farmer and former lawman named Henry (played by Tim Blake Nelson) who, when he discovers an injured man and a satchel of money on his property, is thrust into a dangerous confrontation with outlaws. As Henry protects the stranger and faces the ruthless criminals pursuing him, secrets from his past are revealed. The film combines elements of action, suspense, and mystery, offering a gripping and introspective take on the classic western genre. You can stream Old Henry on the Roku Channel
