The Truth About Marvel Movies: Darker Than You Thought!

You can now safely say that Marvel Studios knows what they’re doing (You can argue about DC’s case). Their movies are well received, boost their sales and even turn some side characters into good case studies for how to revive dead characters. On the other hand, Marvel Movies have some dark secrets – the secret being that they cut out their darkest moments.Through this post I’m going to tell you about some really dark scenes that didn’t make it into the big screen.

Source

Civil War: Captain America’s Death

The movie was na adaptation of a comic book story, like most others, but the most crucial moment from the comic – the death of Captain America – was stripped from the movie. In the comic book, Cpt. America was killed outside of the courthouse where he is being judged for his Civil War crimes. Marvel decided to keep him alive in the movies, maybe because they needed him for further films and you can’t confuse the mainstream audience, right?!

Thor Ragnarok: The Death of Thor

Another case in which a death is not even ommited, but excluded alltogether. In the comic book, Ragnarok had a reason for its title to be, well, “Ragnarok” – the end of days. In the Asgardian war there are no refugees, and all of the 8 realms (Earth is the only one saved) are destroyed! Odin dies, Thor dies, and Loki dies. It’s the end. What would be of Infinity War with Thor dead though, and the mainstream public can’t understand the separate universes and their timelines so… altering the story was easier for Taika Waititi.

Iron Man Movies: Tony Stark, the Raging Alcoholic

Robert Downey Jr. Became a sex symbol that everyone admires, Tony Stark was the playboy philantropist movie goers loved. However, true Marvel fans know about his dark side, as Tony was a heavy alcoholic, fighting against addiction. This dangerous relationship with alcohol can be further explored by going to the “Demon in a Bottle” arc. Now that Iron Man is such an established character in the big screen, I think we’ll never see his human problem arising there.

Iron Man 3: Killian Kills Himself

Aldrich Killian, played by Guy Pierce, has a dark story that wasn’t told. The moment he introduced himself, you get to know that he felt very guilty for stealing and releasing Extremis, the virus. In fact, his depression is so dark and heavy he takes his own life by the time the movie introduces you to him. The movie was far more comical in how they told this story.

Age of Ultron: Ultron is Victorious!

So, this is kind of the biggest change on this list. You see, on the original Age of Ultron story, Ultron wins! He wiped out all of us puny humans and he ruled the planet at his leisure. All of the heroes died, he is fit to do as he pleases. Now the only think that can be done is to travel back in time to kill the mind behind Ultron himself – a man by the name of Hank Pym. Marvel didn’t want its fans to come out of the movie theatre with crippling depression, so they may have changed it… a little bit.

Captain America Civil War: Aunt May Shot, Spider Man Unmasked!

So we already covered this movie and how they changed Captain America’s fate, but did you know that there is another thing subject to change? Well, first things first, Peter Parker goes to a press-conferance and basically tells everyone in the world he is Spider Man. This was done because Iron Man convinced him to do so, thinking it would help the cause of the SRA. This had dire consequences. Now knowing who Spider Man was, Kingpin hired a killer who shot Aunt May. This event leads to Spider Man betraying Iron Man and joining Captain America. Betrayal and darkness in a Marvel movie? Yeah, I don’t think so.

So, as you can see, there are a lot of moments that got hidden away from the public, some of them because they were too dark, but most of them because they would bring the timelines issue on to the table, and the mainstream public would have a hard time understanding the concept. Or so Marvel though...

What other moments did you miss on the movie adaptations of the comics from Marvel? Tell us on the comments below.

There are some really good points made in this article. Obviously adaptation is needed whether it be in marvel movies or any other major motion picture production. I think part of the problem exists around the types of markets they appeal to. It seems natural that the people who read comic books may not be identical to those that are big on movies. There seems to be a compromise needed in that regard as well as the fact that creating a major motion picture is extremely expensive and they can break it down per minute of production (the cost is quite high per minute as you'd imagine) so this means compacting and in some cases skipping important scenes in order to make it work based on industry standards. This is disappointing but simply a reality of the industry. Thanks for the writeup here. I still love marvel movies!

I understand that this might be a problem for some people but they need to make changes for sales and their continuity. I would like for them to focus more on some superhero aspects, like Hank Pym's abusing his wife, Hulk having a family and learning to be at peace with his duality and having that ripped from him when his home planet was blown up, Spiderman making a deal with the devil, I want some ambiguous storylines but I know I will not get it because they want to market it to everyone including children.

Yo ,
Nice work sir

great , follow me please

I never thought of fiction movies like this you mentioned in this story. I am just taking these as entertainment part of my life and I think it is right thing I am doing by not going too deep in these fiction stuff.

Follow me dear

Berniesanders, that you?

I have always been a good fan of Marvel movies and I will say I do enjoy each one of their movies I watch. But seeing all their dark secret I think it should remain in the dark cause it will be really hard for me to think of the stress the heroes passed through in the storyline and also seeing them dead....OW!! It will really have left me depressed. Thanks anyway for sharing this really good to know what they are hiding from us. And also if you can get ANTMAN dark secret too. Thanks

Hahaha I love Iron Man #128 Demon in a bottle - this is a classic cover! I think they did a good job with Robert Downey jr. as Tony Stark in the movies.

I also would add the Todd McFarlance pencilled comics in terms of the symbiont suite, where Peter really gets dark and badly influenced.

Or the weird story of Logan in ORIGIN...

I lost track of how many times Logan's memories were messed with over his long life

Can't wait for Logan's dark story. ;)

I really like the movie, unfortunately in Indonesia cinema is very limited. But I can still watch movies over the internet. Thanks for the movie review you reviewed.

You could add Hulk as seen in Ragnarok normally having his own storyline where he was exiled by the superheroes to a different world right before Civil War. He had his own Gladiator-like story, ending in him rulling that world and having a family. Then the jerk superheroes send a probe that kills his family, making him go amok and return to Earth where he wrecks every hero in sight.

Great post! most of the things you mention are excluded to simplify the story for the mainstream audience as you said but also to keep the movies child friendly since most of the profits come after the movies from kids buying the toys and games!

It is true that almost every Marvel character has a dark side or a not so peaceful background. But this makes them heros in the Marvel universe. Everyone can be good or bad, but to transform from a bad guy to a good guy is the key. We can see this not only in Marvel´s universe, this phenomenon is actually present in any kind of action od science fiction movie such as Star Wars, DC, ....
Nonetheless, it is a very good post.

The "best story" is a dark story, or at least the one that has a serious amount of darkness in it. And when darkness meets good storytelling, then that's the absolute beauty. "Logan" did it. And Christopher Nolan did the same with DC's Batman.

the movies marvel is first and foremost a very high quality product, which should be seen as a fantastic action and with a share of Comedy. Like it much, because the Studio captures a large part of the audience at different ages. The main condition for viewing, is to relax and have fun with the eyes, because it is necessary to watch at the cinema:) thanks to your post I learned a lot:)

Nice post 👍 Thanks for sharing and and very useful information and good job. Congratulations✌ @adsactly

They are making fake heroes and making kids thinking that thor superman spiderman or batman will solve his-her problems and believe them like a god .Marvel are shit.

I am glad that the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies changed the dark twisted stories. I think we have enough troubles in the real world; so some hope in fiction could be something the audience need more than to satisfy comic fans.

[added note]
Even though, in the Age of Ultron someone had to die.

I love to captain America, Titonic and iron Man movies thank you for your informative articles and looking forward to upvote my comments thank you

there are so many cases where both marvel and DC have adjusted events that occurred just so that the public wont be confused on what actually is going on

We all have a our flaws and idiosyncrasies. That just makes us human. We shouldn't be judged completely based on our personal struggles and vices.

These are some super high quality pictures, by the way!
