There are over 100 references to cinema and games in Spielberg's latest film. But here are the core movies worth watching, to maximize your enjoyment of Ready Player One.
You probably have guessed from either watching a trailer, or reading the book, that Ready Player One (RPO) has tons of references to pop culture particularly in the 80s. Steven Spielberg's film adaptation however, borrows more widely from movies and games in general, incorporating pop-culture cameos as modern as 2016. Sure you could take the time to watch/play/listen to every piece of media RPO incorporates into it's narrative and spectacle, but then you won't be left with any time to upvote this post in the next seven days... nudge, nudge. 😉
So to save you save you some time, here are the movies to watch (or have your teen kids watch if you want them to see RPO with you), to maximizing enjoyment of RPO, along with a five word summary of why and a trailer.
1. Back to the Future
Why watch: Zemeckis made the DeLorean iconic.
2. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2
Why Watch: Beware of the true villain.
3. The Shining
Why Watch: Another pseudo Spielberg-Kubrick collaboration.
4. The Iron Giant
Why Watch: Robot heroes make great sidekicks.
5. Gundam F91
Why Watch: "Is that any old mechsuit?"

Thank you @aaa-winner, and thank you for the upvote!
All of these some really great movies, enjoyed all of them, wouldn’t mind watching them seeing Ready Player One
Thank you @plainoldme! And would love to hear if you think there are better choices, after you see RPO
Perhaps the best film to see before Ready Player One is the movie Back to the Future, because it is without a doubt, the one that has more references. Especially the great DeLorian eheh
Agree, hence it being at the top of my list ;)
Yeah! You saw the movie right? My friends were amazed at what they saw. When the movie will be released on DVD I will buy it :)
I did, really really loved it. I wanted to go see it again right after! 😁 Will definitely be getting it on Bluray
