The Meg - Yet another big budget ($150 mil) popcorn summer movie with load of special effects, mediocre performances (lack of chemistry) and predictable plot. Directed by Jon Turteltaub (famous for his 2004’s National Treasure). Since it’s a Chinese co-production, hence quite a number of Chinese characters (Li BingBing and Winston Chao) in the movie.
Brief plot - An expedition beyond the seabed went wrong and set-up the rescue mission with the help of Jonas (Jason Statham) to fight against the titular pre-historic monster shark, megalodon.
Even with its huge budget, it’s still a mediocre and forgettable movie. I think the saving grace is that the movie doesn’t pretend to be a serious movie and sprinkle with regular lighter moments/jokes throughout the movie. The other spark is the cute and adorable child actress called Shuya Sophia Cai, as Meiying (Li Bingbing’s daughter).
A typical family oriented popcorn movie that allows the audience to get awed by the predatory giant meg and how Jason Statham defeat it almost single handedly.
My rating : 3.5 (out of 5 stars) [extra 0.5 star was given to the child actress]
