Mortal is a Norwegian-American production that tries to present the drama of a mysterious person with supernatural abilities in a more serious way. There is no dynamic action or great emotions here, but a slightly darker atmosphere, good special effects and a story that arouses curiosity will appeal to many viewers.

Mortal tells the story of a young man from the United States who hides in the forests of Norway. Eric has extraordinary powers that he cannot control. One day, he accidentally kills a local boy and ends up at the police station. There he meets a psychologist named Christine, who decides to help him control his abilities, as well as discover the secret of the origin of his powers.

The plot of the film is not impressive at first, it develops slowly and schematically. A pair of heroes flee from the revenge-hungry Hathaway, who wants to help Erik at one time and capture or kill another time. The course of this escape is not surprising, because during the journey, a feeling begins to form between Christine and her new protégé. This romance is vague and unconvincing because there is no chemistry in it. Although after some time it is not difficult to guess the origin of the main character's power, the mystery of the farm where the tragedy happened arouses interest. There are numerous crises and spectacular displays of Erik's power along the way, which slightly dynamics the events and awakens him from lethargy. This increases curiosity about what awaits him in this mysterious place. And also how this movie will end.

Mortal is distinguished by the fact that the creators took this story seriously. The film has a gloomy atmosphere that in a way seduces and hypnotizes. It has nothing to do with superhero productions focused on the show and relying solely on the supernatural abilities of the protagonist to provide entertainment. Although here too there will be something for viewers who expect a few moments of strong emotions and tension - incl. helicopter crash. The film is dominated by Erik's drama, who cannot control his emotions and does not know where they come from. It is also worth mentioning that the creators took up the rather risky topic of faith. A cult arises around Erik, people begin to treat him like a god. It is a pity that this topic was treated marginally, not using the full potential of the plot. And this is something fresh and deserving of attention when it comes to people with power in this type of productions.

The story seems to be incomplete and the threads not fully explained. The actions of the heroes are not fully understood, and their changes in thinking are not emphasized enough. Although the ending is the most exciting part of the film, it ultimately disappoints with its broken action. As if the faucet with the money allocated to computer effects had been turned off, production had to be stopped. However, the CGI itself in Mortal is at a good and satisfactory level for a movie that is not a blockbuster. Special effects can even cram into the seat for a short time, like when a helicopter falls or on a bridge. In addition, the camera work can also be enjoyed as it is fluid and also plays around with shots and close-ups, but with sensitivity. This is one of the strengths of the movie, as it conceals less CGI capabilities and is also fun to watch.

Mortal is an interesting attempt to approach the subject of supernatural abilities and powers in a slightly different way. Some viewers, who are not disturbed by the slow pace of events, may be seduced by this more serious and gloomy atmosphere. However, those looking for dynamic action have nothing to look for here. The plot is not impressive, but the motifs of Norse mythology are well woven into it. Still, it remains unsatisfied as the film did not use its fictional potential to tell a really interesting, multi-dimensional story. Mortal ended up with boring schemes, which he gave a dark layer, but emotions are like medicine. The film will remain just a curiosity that will rather quickly fall out of memory.
