[Movie Rewrite] Us (2019)

in #movie5 years ago

Synopsis: A family's serene beach vacation turns to chaos when their doppelgängers* appear and begin to terrorize them.

*an apparition or double of a living person.

SPOILER INSIDE

I was really anticipating Us (2019). It's from the same writer/director Jordan Peele who delivered Get Out (2017) a couple of years ago.

While the plot and the acting were fine, I feel like they missed to deliver a more captivating story and a satisfying ending to it.

Especially when they ventured the doppelgängers premise.

The good and the bad

Best part:

  • Red (evil Adelaide) and the Adelaide are actually the opposite. They swapped places when she was visiting the hall of mirrors and lived the other one's life. That was interesting.

For the sake of this article, we'll keep "real Adelaide" as the one living on the surface and "evil Adelaide" as the one kept captive for all those years with the Tethered.

Worst parts:

  • Not really explaining how the doppelgängers were born, raised, and tended. We just see them mimicking what their counterparts do on the surface.
  • Doppelgängers killing their counterparts and holding hands is just beyond me. I get that the real Adelaide kinda replicated whatever memory she had when she lived on the surface, and made a statement as she says using it... but come on... it fails miserably.

How I would have preferred things to evolve

Switching places is the catalyst of the movie. What happens next should be the actual plot.

Where the Tethered come from.

Must have been a more sinister place, a cursed land where the doppelgängers are born and grow old till their counter part dies. That place happens to have some kind of cave system (to keep it real) that pops up on different places on Earth. One of them leads to inside the hall of mirror.

Evil Adelaide finds her way out of the cursed land and meets the real one. Once succeeded, she dumps the entrance. A one ticket was for a better life.

Real Adelaide surviving the other side and preparing for revenge

Knowing what she knows (talking, reading, coming from the surface), real Adelaide will help the Tethered to understand what they are and how they can be in a better place. And after years, become their leader.

I picture it like something similar to Rise of the Planet of the Apes where Caesar worked to bring his kind to the same level of lucidity it had.

The actual movie did that more or less in a non-satisfying way.

Real Adelaide comes back for revenge and later reclaim the surface

Hatred is the least evil Adelaide should feel about the whole situation. The primary motive is of course take revenge out of the real Adelaide.

That drove the story line of movie but again, failed on the execution.

Evil Adelaide intentions should be more straightforward. Less playful. More decisive. Getting rid of the real Adelaide is now just an optional milestone of her plan. The real goal is to help her own people to reclaim the surface.

A total war between the Tethered and people living on the surface until one of them rules.

The Tethered should succeed and decimate who ever lives on the surface leaving a minority that will regroup and try to fight back. One of the is the real Adelaide.

And it goes from there!

So, what do you think? Wouldn't that make this movie more fun?
