My favorite thing about this movie is how they show you disaster is coming, and there isn’t a damned thing you can do about it. It’s Checkov’s gun all over the fucking place, and it’s epic. When the little boy grabs the batteries for the toy his sister gave him as he’s following his family out of the store. You know what’s coming, and sure enough….there’s the noise. Everyone turns in horror as it lights up. Then, CHOMP. Or when the mother pulls the laundry bag up the stairs and it snags, yanking the nail up. The shot lingers on the nail and (given how everyone is barefoot) you just know someone is stepping on that shit. Sure enough, it pays off at the worst possible moment.
