As a "war" for the planet of the apes, this movie fell a bit short of its mark. However, that doesn't mean the entire movie did.
I wish this movie had a different title. "Story" would have been more appropriate.
My son and I went into the film expecting epic battle scenes of ape vs man. Thanks to the previews we also expected a bit of ape vs ape conflict as well. In other words, we were geared up for an action movie.
That is not what we saw.
This movie was more subtle. Apparently, it was not intended to be a final epic battle (there is one, but it was far less than I expected). It was intended to connect the dots between 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes to 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes to 1968's Planet of the Apes. The battles were not the star of the movie, the story was. It achieved that purpose. I now have a better understanding of the origin of the world on which Charlton Heston and his fellow astronauts landed.
The emotion displayed by these computer generated apes was truly amazing.
Unfortunately, that is not what I paid $20 at the theater to see. I typically only go to the movies to see kids movies with my children or movies where the effects play such a significant role that I feel I need to see them on a giant screen. Every once in a while, I will attend a movie that I just can't wait to see like Baby Driver. I could have waited for this one.
I did not see an edge of my seat, yell, cheer, and throw popcorn extravaganza. This movie felt more like a very good rental rather than a big screen must see.
Don't get me wrong, there is action and some battle scenes... but not enough for a movie with "War" in the title.
Perhaps I would have enjoyed the movie more if my expectations were altered by titling the film: Story of the Planet of the Apes, Prison Break of the Planet of the Apes, or Ape-ocalypse Now.
Any of those three would have been more appropriate titles.
This little girl's story is more compelling than the "war".
The story is compelling. The characters, especially Caesar and his group of closest friends, are very interesting. Most of the story involves this small group of apes as they attempt to accomplish a very important mission. During their journey, the group must balance rage and compassion. The filmmakers did a great job of showing this struggle within the group. What makes it more amazing is they had to do it without the aid of real actors. These were computer generated apes that needed to make me connect with their emotions. Somehow, they pulled it off. I truly felt for these apes.
In addition, the story included many important details explaining how Earth went from a human dominated planet when Caesar was an infant to an Ape dominated one when Charlton Heston says, "Take your stinking paws off of me you damn dirty ape!" It also makes the audience think about love, compassion, ignorance, hatred, and what "humanity" truly is.
So perhaps Philosophy of the Planet of the Apes would have also worked as a title.
Possible spoilers below!
What we have here is a failure to communicate... what this movie is really about.
The vast majority of the action and suspense in the movie is not derived from "war" at all. This movie is a classic prisoner of war movie. If you were to compare it to a WWII movie, it is far closer to The Great Escape than The Longest Day.
And that is OK. I like prisoner of war movies. But they are definitely different from the action packed ones. I don't necessarily need to see prisoner of war movies on the big screen... unless it is one of the best of the genre. This movie is not that.
Perhaps the best title for this film would have been Ape-ocalypse Now.
The horror. The horror.
"The Colonel" (he has no other name) played by Woody Harrelson, shares a striking resemblance to Apocalypse Now's Colonel Kurtz, brilliantly portrayed by Marlon Brando. I don't just mean physically. The two characters share many similarities. It was if the writer said, "I really want to make a PG13 rated version of Apocalypse Now. Let's toss in some apes and make it a Planet of the Apes movie".
That is actually not a bad thing. Just like Kurtz, this Colonel is a prime example of what war can do to a man's psyche. It's not pretty. But neither is war. Perhaps it was a good message for my son to receive. War isn't "cool". It's destructive physically, psychologically, and emotionally. Much of the loss suffered in war can never be recovered. It changes people... and the world.
I guess the big question is: did I like the movie?
My answer is a very lukewarm "yes".
I was never bored. It tied up the trilogy nicely and explained how the Earth became the planet on which Heston landed. Therefore, it wasn't a complete miss. I was just expecting a little more action.
If I had it to do over again, I would have waited and rented this movie.
Upon further reflection, perhaps it is not the movie in which I am disappointed... it is the advertising campaign. Although, the filmmakers made a quality film, the advertisers made a mistake in how they sold it.
Geeky Dad's Movie Guide
Number of times I fell asleep: 0
Number of eye rolls: 0
Number of face palms: 1 (Thanks to trenod's comment below about the gas tank.)
Number of times my kid asked to go to the bathroom or get food out of sheer boredom: 0
Number of times I checked steemit: 0
Number of times I said "That's ridiculous": 1 (Thanks again trendo! How did Caesar get missed so many times?)
Did my kid like it: I only brought my 12 year old son. My 10 year old daughter is too young. He enjoyed it quite a bit.
Would I see it without my kids: I would rent it... I needed to see how the trilogy ended.
Full price/Matinee/Rental/Free/Not worth the time: Rental or perhaps see it at the cheap theater
I hope I don't go ape-shit over this movie...
Hey hey! You just might lol.

The Great Ape-Scape
This is awesome! I am so sad I didn't think of it. Brilliant!!!!!
Me and especially my sister will want to watch this but I will take your advice and wait for rental, you mention it connects the dots which gets me very interested to see it thanks for sharing your take @hanshotfirst
Caesar is one of the greatest adaptations of the growth of a fictional leader. If you watched the entire series of this reboot, his trials and tribulations show how he progresses in a just and intelligent leader. What I find even more interesting are the power dynamics that you need to maintain to hold your place as a leader. It is not about strength, it is about respect and that is earned.
Excellent point. I also liked how the colonel showed what a leader could become... if he loses his humanity.
Yeah, I like the different view points of leaders. Each one becomes a leader through different methods (different passions as well, they did not choose to be a leader but were more so had it forced on them) and you also see the subjects and followers have a different level of devotion. From the colonel, Koba, Rocket, etc.
Wow, I had to click because I literally thought the banner was a photoshop joke of some sort. Came expecting maybe a steemian pitching a wild idea for a Plant of the Apes sequel...and I ended up with this ^^ lol
Isn't a bad movie but i also was expecting more.
A great explanation about this monkey film .. maybe you are a very sensitive observer with the content in the film .. thank you for sharing this very interesting post .. success is always for you
Should I bring my 7-year-old :-)!? I guess I have to see it to see the reason with the name "story" than "war". Just found you, u gained a fan! Love the Number of times I said "That's ridiculous" can't be 0 really :D off topic gonna watch some Apocalypse now, tottaly forgot that.
I would not bring a 7 year old. My daughter is 10 and I thought it would be too much for her.
About the "That's ridiculous" lol!
I should have mentioned that my suspension of disbelief was in full effect. It is a movie about talking apes so I had to just go with it.
Thanks for the reply! means a lot! Resteemed and upvoted! well, i'm sure some ape in war would benefit my daughter :D
Thanks for the review. I will keep my eyes peeled for it to arrive on Netflix or on Amazon. It sounds like me and my oldest son would be the only ones to watch it as well.
Love your moving rating filters I needed this for my husband who manages to fall asleep during rouge Star Wars you have got to be kidding me right !
I will remember your review when I consider movies. Lukewarm movies I tend to think are a waste of time. We have a drive in double feature movie house in Bluegrass. If one movies is a dud at least the other may not be. Thanks for the filters and analysis. - Troy
I saw this movie recently as well. I gotta say, it's not the best and actually I did get bored for moments. It felt like everything went for too long and it could've gone way faster. I went to the cinema to see a war movie and like you said, we got a prisoner of war movie instead.
And the ending was a bit absurd. I mean who puts a gas container near the wall that would make the whole base explode if it was triggered. Explosions were everywhere but magically it wasn't hit until the Caesar decided to throw a grenade at it.
ooooh I may need to change face palms to at least 1 and definitely 1 "that's ridiculous". Thanks for the reminder!
Movie that I like most. The film is very useful and can be a good example for a leader. Hopefully can take the positive side of this movie. Thanks for share
Thank you for the review, I think I'm gonna watch it at home just in case I fall asleep
How old is he?
It always fascinates me how all people have different tastes in movies and book -
Love the end with the eyerolls etc - all o - that can be good or a sign of boredom.
Even though I do not watch sci-fi or robots or war movies, I did enjoy reading your review
A 'No throw popcorner,' got it. Too bad. Really wanting to see a good movie in the theater soon. From our new digs, there's a very nice Regal Cinema only 5 minutes away, and I really want to see something worth seeing. Let me know when you have any 'must sees' coming up
Maybe I'll go scout out Atomic Blonde for you. I am not a fan of Charleze Theron but it looks like an entertaining move. Won't take the kids though...lol
You are so kind to do that for me
Caesar is one of the greatest adaptations of the growth of a fictional leader
I am looking forward to seeing this one but I think I might have missed it in the theatre.
This film was ok :) I like this too :) But this years, Hollywood it's going to make simple movies just to make money. And this makes things very sad.
It's a bonanza of a group of monkeys with a mute kid in tow against a demented colonel with a group of vigilantes. I was excited at first, and it went flaccid real fast. @o@
I loved "Okja" though. ;)
I think you just topped my review in 2 sentences! Well done!
What?! hahah.. But that was really the feels i had. The crucified caesar though. ;)
I remember your review on Spider-Man: Homecoming...
It was a blast! My favorite in all the series at the moment. ^u^
I just watched this movie too and I was scared the whole time.
Oh and I remember I told you I would tell you when I finally watched Spiderman. LOL It was a bit cheezy but still entertaining :)
Were you scared of the apes or the humans?
Thanks for reporting back. They definitely took a more silly route with Spidey this time. I liked it though.
Oh the humans! I was so sad every time an ape got killed. :(
Reading your review affords me the opportunity to think critically about the movies I've seen too.
I haven't seen it yet but I have seen the other one's and I enjoyed them
I'll see it at some point. Need to watch the others again first really.
I could only read the first half of the post as I do intend to watch this movie, though now I will definitely wait until it comes out on video. Your reviews are extremely helpful, this is not the first time you've guided me on a movie, either by getting me motivated to go and watch it as soon as possible, or to lower my expectations, or keeping me from overpaying to see it.
You are my go-to guy for this now :)
I hope you enjoy it. Just make sure you are ready for what it is. I was about to type a spoiler. I am stopping now. LOL
Good review, I really was wondering how this movie was going to turn out. Might have to still see it, at discount on a Sunday morning :D
Good call.
So this one will help me connect all the dots? To be honest, I haven't watched the newer ones, I definitely watched "You filthy Ape!" a time or two when I was in my teens. Didn't have a lot of choices then, seems like they re-ran it at least twice a month, or more. Thanks for all the reviews. I still need to do that review on 'Collateral Beauty." I should probably complete my intro post first, however
I still have not seen it. I really need to.
Have the Kleenex handy
i appriciate u for ur this sense on movies i read ur posts on batman thats a good advises a man to his son and now its already keep it ur best work for always
Number of times you felt sympathy for the apes?
Good one. I'd say 20.
For me it was very disappointing, so much formula. There were gaping holes in the "story". The biggest being the girl.
WARNING!!! Spoiler Alert !!!
When the man she was living with was shot dead, there was no display of any emotion. Was he her father, rescuer, carer or captor, or worse?
The film did not work for me... even in 3D.
I believe it was the Colonel who mentioned that some soldiers with children ran away. I think she was his daughter but she had started to become so primitive that perhaps she did not have enough human emotion left to grieve. Either way, the movie was not as good as it should have been.
Primitive? It is now scientifically documented that many animals grieve. So even if the humans revert to a more animalistic state, they will still grieve. The child was therefore had a mental disability. But the most likely explanation, is terrible script writing and editing.
I enjoyed the movie, but I definitely expected more action and battle scenes. I found one of the apes to just be sooooo funny and likeable. I'm pretty sure you know which one I'm talking about.
I did doze off on some of the parts. Not because the movie was boring, but because I got little sleep the night before. So I kept waking up during the movie and asking my friends "What happened??!!!" & "How'd they get here?!!"
But I overall I enjoyed the movie. At least it wasn't so crappy that I wanted a refund lol.
LOL! Nice use of gifs to tell your story! I didn't feel I waste day time either. Just a bit different than I had hoped.
Great point about managing to create animated characters with which we could connect. The visual emotions were as integrated into the story as human actors can achieve. I never stopped to think how seamless that aspect of the film was. I think I liked it significantly more than you did.
I think my problem was with my own mindset walking in. Its a good movie... just not what I was looking for. I think if I had rented it I would have liked it more.
These films do my head in, its all the same and bores me, I think they have over done them
Thank you for guide but I need to look it first I don't want to spoi it when I see 😂
Indeed a very very good review, i havent seen this movie yet but your review deffinently wants me to see it even more now. Your 0 number of eyes rolled also helps a bit as i was a bit sceptical about this movie.
Keep up the good work!
I idd change that slightly due to some unrealistic stuff during the main battle.
I'm already really interested what other movies will be in the list:) Batman description and tips were my favorite so far, may be it just was the closest to me
I am actually putting something together about The Force Awakens right now. Usually I just write reviews of whatever movie I see with my kids. I do want to write more of the life lessons ones. Thanks for the encouragement!
I really can't wait to see it, I really love your perception and how you talk about the sense of these movies. Being a Star Wars, DC and Marvel lover myself I really every time find something really special for myself in your blog.
In my family we have a bit opposite situation, it's me who now tries to open the Star Wars universe for my mom, ha-ha:) In my family I'm the first geek of such kind, and really transformed to a one when I was already about 25 or so, I just had no access to all these wonderful worlds as a kid being born in a wrong country for this.
By the way talking about wrong country well, since I'm already talking about this) - it gets better and better every year:) Bought myself a Star Wars graphic novel today (you can check out my last post, it's about it, only if interested https://steemit.com/starwars/@inber/darth-maul-graphic-novel-new-book-of-my-shelf-and-a-short-review), and it was a fantastic feeling, it's something I never could do in my city before, even when I already was quite adult and worked, but we just had no comics or any of such stuff.
After reading your review, this is only a one time watch and I will watch it on amazon prime , will not go to the theater to watch it. It seems OK movie.
That is how I would describe it. Just "OK". Not bad by any means. My son really liked it.
The first time i was confuse when i watch this movie. when the simon comeback to earth, the apes commander wanna kill the simon. nice story
