A Geeky Dad's Movie Guide to Black Panther (2018)

in #movie-review7 years ago

My family and I saw Black Panther in 2D IMAX (real) on Saturday. I think I waited so long to write the review in hopes of convincing myself that I liked the movie more than I did.

Although I love 2D IMAX, this movie did not take full advantage of the medium.

It has not worked.

This month, I have already become an outlier by being the only person on Earth who enjoyed The Cloverfield Paradox. Now I have become the incredibly rare double-outlier as I think I'm the only one who didn't love Black Panther.

I liked Black Panther. I'm glad I saw it. However, I don't think I ever need to see it again. The number of times I will re-watch a movie has become my measuring stick for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At this point, I am going to see every Marvel movie. I am also confident I will enjoy every one. But there are now two distinct categories, films I will buy the day they become available on Blu-ray... and all the rest.

Black Panther falls into that second category.

The Good

The casting is perfect. Not only is Chadwick Boseman athletic enough to be believable as the incredibly nimble Black Panther, he can actually act. This role relies more on acting than your typical super hero movie. His choice to use a very believable African accent was on the money. I think the movie would have seemed "hokey" without that layer of authenticity from all of the characters. Forest Whittaker is incredible (as always). Michael B. Jordan did a fantastic job as the "villain" (perhaps too good... more on that later). Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong'o are very similar to Boseman. They can both fight and act. It was actually quite impressive. It was a real treat to see Martin Freeman and Andy Serkis reunited on screen. I do wish at some point Freeman's character would have asked Serkis' "What have I got in my pocket?"

Letitia Wright steals every scene she is in.

Letitia Wright as Princess Shuri deserves her own paragraph. She absolutely stole the show. Not only can she fight, she is almost the only comic relief in the otherwise super-serious movie. I read today that she has shot up to number one on the list of Disney Princesses... I can't argue.

The effects were like every other Disney produced Marvel movie: stunning. I think I have used that word in every review I have written about the Marvel movies. As soon as it stops being true, I will stop writing it. Both Black Panther suits were incredible. The way they showed the suits absorbing energy was a very cool added bonus. At one point my son and I were so impressed by an effect that we simultaneously turned to each other and said, "Whoa that's cool... jinx." I am always on the lookout for new effects. Black Panther had one. My son and I were both struck by how amazing an effect involving what appeared to be sand transforming into a series of three dimensional objects was awesome.

The action sequences and chase scenes were spectacular. (More on this later)

Although the story was a little complicated, everyone above the age of 10 should be able to follow it. It was interesting enough and fairly plausible (for a super hero movie). Unfortunately there was a huge flaw in it. I refuse to include spoilers in these posts so I will sum it up by saying that I could not get over the fact that a tribe who respected tradition so much would fail to adhere to their ancient tradition for no apparent reason.

Although the music was good, I was hoping for GREAT. I was anticipating a few more heavy hip-hop beats throughout the film. There were some... but I wanted more.

My complaints

I loved Kilmonger. The character is very interesting and portrayed perfectly by Jordan. But here is my biggest complaint: he was kind of right. I could understand his point of view. Although I do enjoy complicated movies that make you think and question yourself and the world, I don't really want that in my comic book movie (unless it's The Dark Knight, but that is a very unique case). I want to sit back and despise the villain and wait for his inevitable and spectacular demise. Unfortunately, during Black Panther I found myself thinking, "He's going about it the wrong way... but he has a point." I don't want a super hero movie to illicit that type of internal conflict in me. I don't want to have to explain to my twelve year old that from the British point of view, George Washington was a terrorist. There are plenty of other movies to spark that conversation. Although I'm actually looking forward to that discussion, I just want my comic book movies to be filled with fun.

Even with a name like "Killmonger", I couldn't totally hate him.

Although not a spoiler, here is something that will only make sense after you have seen the movie. I think Black Panther's father was more of a villain than Killmonger.

Another problem with the characters is the fact that Black Panther wasn't my favorite one in the movie. I liked all three female leads and the villain more than T'Challa. I think the main reason for that is that Black Panther is so serious all the time. Anyone wearing a skintight Lycra cat suit should be able to crack a smile every once in a while.

The movie is also incredibly serious. I don't mind some dark and heavy back story, but in the end, I watch these movies in order to have fun. Instead of running out of the theater energized to play fight with my son, I found myself more in a mood to debate politics. Although the story was good, it wasn't much fun.

Yes please.

There is not enough action. Even with a running time of 2 hours and 14 minutes, there are too few action sequences. Although the ones that did occur were fabulous, I wanted more.

In fact, I think that sums up the entire movie.

I wanted more:

  • Action
  • Humor
  • Fun
  • Evil from the villain
  • Joy from the hero
  • Hip-Hop
  • Princess Shuri

Should you see it?

Of course!

It's a Marvel movie with a good story. However, I will be telling my friends to lower their expectations a bit and "Don't believe the hype". It is not the best Marvel movie. For me, it doesn't even crack the top 5.

There are TWO scenes after the credits. Make sure to watch both of them.

I thought it was fair. It had all the telltale signs of Marvel, with interesting characters and lots of special effects. But overall, it just did not ensnare my attention. I really didn't buy the whole isolated world with super high technology, but people still walking barefoot in the marketplace and buying woven baskets or farming the land in a basic manner. Nope.

As for the plot, it was weak. Only elite bloodlines can be king, which is determined by a fight. For such an enlightened technological country, they seem too barbaric and then talk badly of other countries. In one hour a bad man basically enslaved the entire country. Really?

So, entertaining visuals but terrible overall plot. Towards the end, I didn't care who won, I just wanted this long movie to end.

I really want to see this. I love Marvel and DC films. Even if they are cheesey x

How possible and realistic is the story depicted here, feel like not seeing the film again sef. The story line is poor then

I plan on seeing it but i am not going to go in all starry eyed nor am i going to go in hating it. I think your complaint about the main character being to serious should be reevaluated. even in the comics Black Panther is super serious, look at his semi constant interactions with deadpool. I mean if you get the guy to laugh you can bet he is an imposter or a doplaganger. other than that i want to go see it in 3D.

That is a great point. I mean he is royalty after all. It makes sense that he is a bit formal. So I guess the filmmakers should get credit for staying true to the character. He's just not my favorite. So the fact that they did a great job with his sister is even more important now.

i will just post a link because it will take up the whole comment section if i post a picture of it all. it gives you a pretty good sense of his lack of humor dealing with deadpool.

I saw the movie last week, I clearly enjoyed it. The little flaw that I will mention is maybe a lack of rhythm at the beginning, but it is both the defect and the quality of the film in my opinion: we try to present the Wakanda and that's what we look, but I thought it was a bit long. Beautiful action scenes, the one in Korea that I loved from beginning to end, it was well paced for the shot and the advanced technology of Wakanda is probably the only time it should have been used for a fight (as said Boss, otherwise only the suit of BP and his skills would have been enough, but hey I never said "Too much".
Very little humor but very effective to smile, see laugh, without breaking the delirium (it remains in the scenes in calm atmosphere so it goes very well).

Small defects of special effects sometimes, when the mask closes I found that the face disappears oddly, and a lack of depth on some plans of the Wakanda.

The big highlights:

  • Very well developed characters and globally all endearing
  • Killmonger very well introduced in the MCU, I loved and he imposes, but maybe his time of appearance was a bit too short in the end, I do not know too much ...
  • I liked the performance of Serkis in Klaw too, we find the character of AoU who is very funny by his behavior.
  • Wakanda is WAKANDA. Successful adaptation.

Go for it and enjoy it.

Thanks for another great review! I enjoyed the movie too!

Your reviews always go above and beyond - no exception!

Well done again!

I had a huge question - to watch it or not. Because I thought it will be different Marvel series, so I was right. Too serious is not good. I also watch these films for their action moments and to have some fun. Also, Villain has to be super evil. Eviler than Sith Lord!!

This month, I have already become an outlier by being the only person on Earth who enjoyed The Cloverfield Paradox.

You're not alone man, I also enjoyed it :d

i kinda liked it also.

Wow friend.
I love blacks action
Guess what, its because i am an upcoming musician with a little ability of acting
Anyway, i love this.

When i go to see a Disney film the last thing i want to do is think what's going on, i want to sit back and enjoy it.

Thanks for the balanced review. Will be watching it with the Wife this weekend. Daughter endorsed it strongly after watching it on opening night.

The film is great and interesting .... I went to the cinema yesterday to watch the movie IMG_20180221_145150.jpg

Have you seen the poster in China greater than a movie ? :))

That is so cool!

Yesss super cool , and look Simple comparison of the American box office:

Black Panther in 4 days: $ 215 million

Justice League in 13 weeks: $ 228 million

The two films are close to the level in my opinion but the figures are laughing :D :D

I've been curious about this movie. I wasn't a big fan of Luke Cage because I thought it was really lacking in the action department.

I'm all for history and cultural idealogy but I also feel that I show should really strike a viewer hard so that he's saying "HECK YEAH."

I got that with Daredevil and I even got it with Jessica Jones but I felt like Luke Cage was the weakest of the three. I haven't seen the one about the fist.

I've been worried that Black Panther will fall into the same arena as Luke Cage and being a rather talkative movie that doesn't have a lot of full fist to that wall action.

Wow I couldn't agree with you more. I was so disappointed in Luke Cage. It was more like The Wire than a super hero show. I loved Jessica Jones and Luke Cage in it. Daredevil was great too. Iron Fist is HORRIBLE. do not spend one second on that show.

Black Panther is MUCH better than Luke Cage. It is more story than action but the ratio is far better than Luke Cage (which had almost none). Black Panther has almost enough... but I wanted more.

I bet you will like this one but not love it.

alright if we are talking mavel netflix series...................... Punisher. Oh my god they knocked that one out of the park.

I am a huge Marvel lover. Be it X-men, Avengers or any of the stand alone movies I am usually all in. I really enjoyed the introduction to the Black Panther character during the Captian America Civil War film. I thought that when this movie was released it would be the same as the others and we would rush to see it but that hasn’t happened. The trailers look great and we are reminded about the film non stop whenever we walk into any store. Maybe things have just been too busy around home lately? I actually gave the whole family movie passes for Christmas that are still unused so maybe we should get to the theatre this weekend. I’m sure it will be a good movie. All Marvel films are for me but I was also a kid who spent many a weekend day sitting in a comic book shop and building a collection of Marvel heroes at home. This review has me very curious about what I will think. It too many spoilers so well done with that part. I’ll let you know what I think when I see it. Is it possible for the post credit scenes to be your favourite part of a movie?? I always look forward to those and they are often talked about just as much as the film we watched. Haha

I knew I liked you for a reason lol. Please report back. I think most of my friends will like it. Just not sure if they will love it. I think I was reacting to some people saying it is the best Marvel movie ever. I'll take Thor Ragnarok, GotG, Logan, Winter Soldier...

Logan was absolutely amazing!!! I hated when it ended. I was sad to see Wolverine that way but I truly enjoyed the way they told the story. I know that they can jump timelines and we can have lots more Wolverine but it will be a tough job trying to get us all to believe anyone other than Hugh Jackman could play that role.

ahhhhh, before my time here. I'm still such a Steemit baby. haha. Just read it. Bang on!! I'm guessing you're a little excited about the Solo movie coming? It's one I might stand in line for on opening night.

For sure. I will see it on opening night. Such a great character, it would be hard to mess it up... but I have been burned by thinking that before lol.

Logan was everything it needed to be for that timeline. I truly in my heart wish they would find another actor of Jackmans caliber and looks but about a foot shorter and a much thicker build like the wolvi in the comics. i know that would be a tall order to fill but i can keep my fingers crossed.

I go next week:)

I gotta check this movie out.

Haven't watch this movie yet. But hearing many people said that it's great, seems I have to get myself to the cinema this weekend!

Thank you for sharing

There's a lot of social media talk about sabotaging this movie by a "certain group" all because it's going to put the "Black Male Director" on the Hollywood success map! We Brothas' gotta make sure THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN! "Happy boycotting"! PS: No major comic book fan but this looks worth a shot!

It seems quite interesting. I'm eager to look at it :)

I love this movie so much. Huhuhuh watching in cinema twice hehhe

This great movies.... i appreciate this black panther. all the best dear...

Black panther is an interesting movie, keep it up beautiful writeup.

Good movie.thanks for shareing

Been hearing allot of good things about this movie cant wait to see it.

Pretty good review. I think that all of us can be a villain under the right circumstances. Being right but going about it wrong makes Kill, ombré relateable. I once stole $200 to when I was a kid, but I did it to help pay the mortgage after my parents broke up. It was wrong as hell and in that instance, I was a villain, though I had a pretty important and valid reason for my wrongdoing.

Black panther, I saw the move last week Thursday in the cinema. It was cool to me, planning to go see it again on or before Friday. I use Princess Shuri as my phone wallpaper

That movie has been trending. I think it's time I see what it looks like.

encouraging & surreal!

I gave up on watching any comic book movies after the second film in the original Spiderman trilogy. Still, it's nice to read a review of this heavily-hyped movie that isn't totally glowing. It feels more honest.

Oh, no no no no no no no. you can not base other comic movies off of the spiderman series. They were horrible. Thats like saying you will never fly again because a few planes have crashed.

Haha! Well, I won't say I will never fly again, but I DO hate flying. Trains are more my thing.

I forgot that I did see Suicide Squad on Netflix....a movie I had NO interest in, and had to be coerced into watching by my husband and the foster girl who was staying with us at the time. It turned out to be better than I thought it would be. So, Suicide Squad and two of the original Spiderman trilogy movies, and that's been it for comic book movies for me, so far.

I think the most recent movie I saw in the theater was the second Smurfs movie. I'm interested in seeing the one coming out about the Winchester Mystery House.

of all the spider man the newest is probably the best but it still wasn't great in my opinion. i thought it was kinda weak and strayed from the story line in the comics. I think all of these comic movies would be better if they got directors that were familiar with the source material and stopped trying to pull a Fergie / national anthem move and change something you shouldn't change. Not sure if you like The Punisher but they really stayed pretty true to his character in the net flix series other than how his family died. On the subject of spider man i am super stoked to see the new Venom (spider mans nemisis) staring Tom Hardy who is one of my favorite actors.

I'm interested in the new Sabrina, The Teenaged Witch they're going to do on Netflix (she's part of the Archie comics universe). It's supposed to be darker than the sitcom. Should be interesting.

I almost laughed out loud at your mention of Fergie and the national anthem. I saw the video of it on YouTube, and I DID laugh out loud at her performance. It made me sad at the same time, because I grew up watching her on Kids, Incorporated, and she was such a cute girl, close to my age, with a great voice. But, that national anthem performance was ridiculous.

I keep seeing ads for something on Netflix called "Jessica Jones." I have no idea what it is, other than it is supposedly based on a comic book, but the previews look pretty awesome. I may check out that one.

Ok. you are going to open a can of worms there. Jessica Jones is really good BUT you will have to also watch
Dare Devil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist because they all tie into one big series as The Defenders. All of them are intertwined and use the same characters. I will tell you now that Iron Fist is hard to set through. It is like they hurried it through so they could get to making the Defenders which is the last of the series. They go in this order
1 dare devil
2 jessica jones
3 luke cage
4 iron fist -------ZZZZZZZ
5 the defenders

hope that helps

yeah i use to watch sabrina when i was younger and her cat salem with her cookie aunts. i had no idea they were going to do a remake. if anyone is going to do a remake of anything i am good with netflix doing it, they have been pretty bad ass lately.

I'm actually loving the Fuller House remake of Full House on Netflix. It is SO much better than the original. And, I just heard today that Netflix is also rebooting Lost in Space.

Great review. I'm yet to see it, but after your description, it's definitely something I'll be going to see on the weekend.

if it happens to me sometimes that the expectation with these films becomes very big, I will see it to see if I agree with you, greetings!

good review ;)

I thought the graphics and the fight scenes where AMAZING!!! I do agree there were not enough fight scenes.

very exciting, this movie, I've seen it 2 times. hehehe I hope that part 2 comes out soon. Marvel mostly produces the best.U5dt4rchhq1RgTT3AYZz1zd3wGCdM8K.gif

I just watched trailer but didn't watch full movie because the Movie still not release in our state...
Hopefully soon will watch it...

Such a great review. There has been so much hype about this movie and I find many times when that is the case I am a bit let down. I plan to see the movie but I can relax and see it a bit later.

Yay!! I’m so exited to go and check it out....
Only heard wonderful things about it, and today is buy one get one free at the movies here, score!!

I didn't see it in 3D, but I think the many action scenes, particularly the chase through Busan and the climactic fight in the vibranium mines would be pretty spectacular in 3D/IMAX, if you're inclined to drop money that way. But the story is so solid and action so well-staged that the movie is completely satisfying without the extra. It depends on how much value you place on spectacle.
BlackPanther-challenge.jpg

It really awesome movie. Nice review.

I and my friends are planning to watch it tomorrow as we didnt find time yet. So, is it worth to watch atleast once?

Thanks for the review. In a Hollywood era where so few original movies are being made, I find the Marvel movies to be about as good as it gets these days. I would not claim they are Oscar worthy, but they have a consistent level of quality I appreciate.

Based on your review I'm confident I'll enjoy Black Panther as well. I try to judge each movie on its own merit, and not go in with "comic book" expectations. I might even prefer the partially justified villain as it makes for a better story. I find the comic book villain trope of tying the woman to the tracks for the hero to save or wanting to destroy the world solely because he (let's face it, the villain's a he) is evil to be poor motivation, even for someone who is simply evil.
