When It Becomes Too Late To Say Sorry

One of the best lines I have heard was given to an intending couple. It was actually given by the bride's father. It goes thus, "where two or more people are living or exist, be it in a relationship, family, office, school, church or association, there must be a misunderstanding one day. When you keep this in mind, you'll be willing to forgive each other when something goes wrong or when someone offends you".

Infallibility is the very nature of man that cannot be wished away. None of us is perfect. We are bound to make mistakes, experience imperfections and less than perfect conditions. Such is the vicissitude of every human existence.

It is sad however that many of us who are obviously aware of our fallibility allow our relationship to be marred simply because we were wronged by others. Our problem most times is not that we are wronged; it is our inability to say sorry. It is because we always feel the other party should apologize.

Forgiveness is not what we do for others. It is what we do for ourselves. Anytime you forgive someone, you feel this less burden in your heart. There is this new spirit in you. To forgive does not mean you're wrong, it means you value the other person and the relationship between you. It means you do not want to lose him or her. It shows strength because it is not easy. Only the strong can forgive.

Is there any time you shouldn't forgive? When is forgiveness unnecessary? Permit me to answer this with another rhetorical question, when is show of strength unnecessary? For Christians, Christ emphasized that there's no maximum time or limit to which should decide not to forgive someone again. He said we should forgive 77 times 7 times in a day. Obviously, it's impossible for someone to offend you that much in a day.

Don't let ego get in the way of your strength. Love and cherish relationship. Be eager to forgive.
