An Austrian psychiatrist, Victor Emil Franklin (1905-1997), was once forced to live in a Nazi concentration camp. Father, mother, brother and wife killed all. He himself was forced to witness various forms of torture and suffering. One thing he observed in this tragic experience was the number of prisoners who died of fear and despair even before being tortured. While there is a group of prisoners who are tortured however, in any kind of suffering, they remain resilient and even finally survive like him.
The survivors were then examined by the psychiatrist. And it turns out the fact they can survive because they have a meaningful life. They can discover the meaning behind suffering. They can overcome fear because there is meaning behind the fear. In Nietzsche's language, "If you know the why, you can bear any how." If you know why you are suffering, then you will be able to withstand any painful suffering.
The story above really inspires us to give meaning to everything that happens to us especially the unpleasant things with a pleasant picture. Every day there came something pleasant or unpleasant. Most of us will laugh when we find happiness and instead weep when we find sad things. It is not wrong because people generally interpret something exactly as felt by the feeling at that moment.
But if we interpret something as seen and heard and felt as it is then the consequences of our lives will be very vulnerable to change at any time. In the morning hear the news got a gift, instantly excited no match. Hours later heard a sick family start crying. In the afternoon may be laughing again, etc.
Netter friends, our life is divided in two; the first to live short-term and the second long-term. In order for us to have a constant lifestyle, a stable spirit and a strong mental, everyone should make a design and a picture of life in the end what it will be like.
There is a simple example. A mother who is pregnant for 9 months, not without suffering. In the early days of pregnancy usually the body's physiological structure changes, by itself the body chemistry also directly affect the physical. There is a sense of nausea, discomfort, vomiting, not feeling well, etc. The moon progresses, instead of no additional risk, the burden grows. But why does a mother still survive and even smile when pregnant? That's because he imagined a cute little baby soon to be with him and become his life partner. The price of 9 months pregnancy accompanied by pain and discomfort almost did not feel because it has other meanings.
There are other examples. A reckless father came into the blazing fire. He went straight in without questioning here and there. Apparently he wants to help his son who is in the burning house. For those of us who do not have the intention behind the attachment, the taste-it will not try to approach the blazing fire. And many other stories that show heroism and logically unreasonable the person is doing it.
When it comes to daily life, we can do things that are "rather reckless" for our benefit and good in the future. Someone who works very disciplined, get up early, go to the office, hold meetings, go see clients. In the afternoon meeting again. He does it repeatedly every day. There are two possible reactions of employees who conduct meetings and discipline every day. The first employee will feel overwhelmed by feeling tired and tired. While the second employee felt very excited because he realized he would get a reward or award from his company.
The case of Japanese workers is another example to emulate. In Japan, they do have the same working hours as in Indonesia, 8 hours, 1 hour break. But instead of 8 hours - 1 hour, there is 8 hours + 1 hour break. As a result the total working hours is 9 hours. Only when working, they really work, no longer accompanied by other activities that do not support the work. While Indonesians, when working hours still take the time to relax, whether smoking, ngegosip and chat with his friends. Workers in Japan also have meaning that by working they have a high self-esteem and pride because it can build his country through his work. Not surprisingly with the spirit of work, Japan became a very calculated country in the world.
One more example that can be used as an analogy how suffering we experience can have a very deep meaning. This happens to the fasting person. Logically the body needs nutrients for daily activities and activities. But because you want to achieve something deeper meaning, someone do fast all day, do not eat, do not drink. Only the power of meaning behind fasting alone can make a person survive and even happy to run the fast. Even some people do not feel hungry or thirst excessively because it is common.
Next question, what is your goal in the future? Do you really believe that the purpose of life gives a very deep meaning to you? If yes, surely you will want to pay the price, no bargain. This is a proof of one's sincerity to pursue meaning that has an effect on the existence of the self and the hope that will come. All work becomes very light when there is a meaning behind suffering.
