I like to think that we are the product of what we feed ourselves. And just like food, there is a need to be careful and intentional about what gains access to our minds.
“Your mind is your greatest asset.”
Many people find it difficult to understand this even though it’s everywhere.
The world you live in is shared with over 7 billion other people, so you should know that not every piece of information out there is meant for you.
One of the reasons why people feel overwhelmed with life is because they haven’t learned to curate their minds. Maybe you didn’t even know that it’s a thing.
If your mind is a free-for-all, there will always be chaos in there. Think about it. You cannot continue to feed your mind with bad news and expect to stay positive.
You need to be able to curate your mental space if you want to continue to be the amazing work of art you are. You need to be very careful of who and what you let into your space.
Decide who you want to be.
You can’t know where to turn if you have no idea where you should be going. In your quest to curate your space, it only makes sense to have a mental picture of what you want.
As much as life seems to be a community thing, and everyone seems to be preaching so much about your need to be selfless, I think you need to first be selfish.
You need to think of yourself first before anything else.
Who do you want to be? What’s the ideal life you’d rather have? Would you rather text or call? -- It's as simple as that.
You cannot curate your space effectively if you don’t think about yourself first. It is only when you are at your best that the world can truly enjoy who you are.
Defining your ideal life is the first step.
Figure out what you need.
The next thing to do is to understand the tools and the steps needed to get to your ideal space.
You want to know what path to follow, and what gear to carry. You want to know if it’s a picnic or a costume party. You want to know if you should fill up your stomach or go there hungry.
I strongly believe that you need to first take care of yourself before you can effectively care for another soul. You simply cannot give what you don’t have.
If you’re going to put yourself first, you’re going to have to turn down a lot of other things trying to compete for that space. You will also need to pick up some new things.
Focus
Choosing to do what you want, especially when it’s not what the majority wants, can be hard. You are going to have to prioritize all the things you previously took for granted, and figure out the ones that are the most beneficial to you.
Successfully curating your space isn’t a walk in the park. There will be times when you would want to stop and just be “normal” again.
It takes extra effort to stand out — to block out every other thing. On this journey, you will need to be intentional about every step you take.
I hope you find the courage to start as many times as you need to.
