Hello Michael
There are plenty of us here. Check out the teamsouthafrica tag sometime. I'm thinking of planting Kei appel but I'm wondering whether it will be frost resistant or not. I'll do more homework.

Happy Steeming to you

@nikv
Thank you, will keep an eye out and also use the tag in future, I usually just use southafrica as a tag. Thank you for response.

I found this bit of info on the Kei appel, seems it would be fine in frosty weather

It is an attractive, drought- and frost-resistant tree or shrub. Dovyalis caffra. ... The Kei-apple grows in valley bushveld, dry areas, wooded grassland, on forest edges, from Eastern Cape through KwaZulu-Natal to Swaziland, into Limpopo [Northern Province] and Zimbabwe. ... The Kei-apple is easily propagated from seed

Stay blessed...

You notice that it doesn't grow naturally in Gauteng? I'm not sure why that would be

hmmm. maybe some proper research is in order :-)

One thing about many of our plants is their adaptation to particular soils. Protea and stamvrug abound on the koppie but Protea only grows in an acid soil, Stamvrug in the rocky quartzite. Perhaps Kei apple doesn't like the soil

Now that you mention the Protea, that is still one of our beautiful plants/flowers I would like to attempt here in my garden, apparently gorws well out here in KZN.

Bonus is I would have free proteas that lasts "forever" :-) will give it a go and report in a post soon.
