Idea Currency: 6 Startup Ideas to Make Money Today

Do ideas really have value?

Anyone remotely familiar with James Altucher has heard of his suggestion of comming up with 10 ideas a day.

This is a great exercise to get your brain moving beyond the basic autopilot of everyday life.

However, ultimately we would like for these ideas to benefit more than our brains.

We want them to help our pocketbooks!

With that in mind here are my 6 best ideas for you to make into income:

1) Business Resumes

Here is the idea:

Help businesses to create resumes to give to potential employees/investors.

Why?

For decades the employee has had the burden of supplying a resume to potential employers showcasing their talents and accomplishments. In return they are supposed to know about the company they are applying to and do the research themselves on it.

But work is supposed to be a voluntary relationship between both sides.

They agree to pay you and you agree to work for them.

It is time for businesses to step up and be more forthcoming on their end of the relationship.

If I want to apply to your company I should be able to have a one page summary of what your company is all about. I should be able to quickly determine what it is you have to offer in ways of compensation and benefits, potential room for growth and advancement and a snapshot of the firm’s financial health.

The Service

Companies don’t have the time always to put together something like this for the public.

It would take time and effort that could be hired out to a business to business type of company.

The way I see it is that a business would hire you to create the document and make it available to them.

With today’s hyperlinked society, the document should be a PDF or similar type and have available hyperlinks to allow further information that does not fit on one page. Furthermore the document should be in the style similar to infographics and include a visually appealing arrangement full of color, shape, and pizzazz.

Who needs this?

Anyone who wants to be upfront with the people they intend to hire.

Companies could include this documentation on their webpage, for download, on job listing sites (such as indeed.com) and others. This will help attract top talent in a new and unique way.

2) 3D Printing Idea

Here is the idea:

Well my idea is for an online database of printable board game pieces and or characters. For the times you lose a piece, need more props, or just want something unique or different for your games.

I see this will become more needed once 3D printers are widely available in people’s homes.

You could monetize the project by have a FREE section of basic pieces (i.e. chess pieces or other common board games) and then a pay per download for more specialized pieces, say perhaps Zombies!!!

Make sense?

Oh I just had this idea too, have the game board be able to be printed also.

Ponder it and perhaps I will be able to download a game and all the pieces from you in the future when I get my 3D printer someday!

Why?

3D printing is going to be BIG!

The Service

Online database of printable board game pieces and or characters. Or really anything that will be 3D printed in the future.

Who needs this?

We all will one day.

I hope.

3) WordPress Content Management System (CMS) for app development

Here is the idea:

Create a CMS for developing apps similar to the way WordPress allows for website development

Why?

Millions of apps exist.

Most of them are terrible.

When people have good ideas for apps there is a confusing process to take it from idea to actuality. There are technical and programming aspects, the ability to outsource development, and then there is the headache of miscommunication.

WordPress has opened the world of website development to the general population with their easy to understand Content Management System (CMS). Now there will be a new, yet familiar, way to create and develop apps for everyone.

The Service

This service can include a similar setup as WordPress by offering a free version and a paid for version.

The free version will include the platforms name in a watermark on or in the app and would have a limited availability of features.

The paid for version would include a plethora of plugins that could be used to enhance the app development.

This also creates a separate market for these plugins that the App CSM firm could also control, manage or profit from. A third market would be developed through the education and training on how to use the App CSM and its plugins.

Who needs this?
I have come across many creative people with good ideas who don’t know the first thing about developing apps. They have zero experience with outsourcing or working with an international team of developers.

This App CSM takes away all of the trouble and allows for the user to have a personally controlled experience.

4) App Flea Market Finder

Here is the idea:

An app that quickly shows users where the nearest and upcoming flea markets, swap meets, garage sales, and other trade shows will be hosted.

Why?

Flea markets, swap meets, garage sales, and other trade shows continue to be a popular place to gather, find good deals and to be a strong secondary market for consumer items. Unless you know someone who has been there, they are often under marketed and relatively unknown.

The events I’ve been to have heavy traffic, but there is a wider world of potential visitors who don’t go due simply to lacking the information of the existence of said events.

The Service

This app will aggregate regional flea markets, swap meets, garage sales, and other trade shows.

It will include when and where they will be hosted and quickly shows users the details.

The app can be supported via advertisements and sponsors from the listed events.

Who needs this?

This will be a useful tool for antique dealers, collectors and the general public.

This app will be particularly useful for people who travel or would like to travel to trade shows but do not know when and where to find the events.

5) App Tool Trader

Here is the idea:

The sharing economy is here to stay and that will expand to items beyond cars (Lyft/Uber, and houses (airBnB). The future will include trading of tools.

There is already on app on the market for this idea.

Why?

As a recent homebuyer, I have several needs for tools that I don’t own.

And don’t want to own.

I need a shovel, but don’t want to shell out the cash to use it once and then store it in my garage.

My neighbor has three shovels and hardly ever uses them himself.

With the Tool Trader app we would be linked together to “tool share” and everyone would come out ahead.

The Service

The app would be a platform to make connections between neighbors. Let’s face it, as much as we would like to believe in the TV fantasy of neighbors knowing each other and hanging out, that just doesn’t always happen.

In an internet world people are more and more isolated and need other ways to make connections to people in their community.

Tool Trader also allows for a wider range of community by connecting you to any distance you are willing to travel to make the trade.

The app would only facilitate in the arrangement.

There would be a section for swapping straight tool for tool. A section for trading a tool for temporary service or help on a project. An option for “renting” your neighbors tool for a price you all negotiate. Or an option to purchase the tool outright from your neighbor.

The app would gather revenue in a multiple of possible avenues.

It could be an app for purchase.

It could be free with advertisements.

It could also arrange to be involved in the above mentioned transactions and collect a small fee or percent for being part of the process.

Who needs this?

Millennials for sure would be a primary target for this app.

They are coming into the world of being new homeowners and have a heavy amount of college debt preventing them from easily buying things they need.

The sharing economy is already being embraced by this generation and would continue to play a vital role in the world moving forward in looking to reduce, reuse and recycle.

6) Uber/Lyft for help moving

Here is the idea:

Sometime you need a truck for an hour. Renting a Uhaul is too complicated. A app that allows for a “rent a truck” to show up and help quickly for a small fee is the new way to move.

Why?

Most people I know don’t own a truck.

When buying a new couch or other large object, say from a home improvement store, I don’t have a way to transport this from there to the house.

The Moving App will allow me to request a truck, have it show up and the driver as a service helps load my items, and then they follow me in my car home and help unload the item.

The Service

Have people with pickups that are willing to "rent" them out and their help for moving services.

Who needs this?

Anyone who would rent a Uhaul/Budget truck, anyone who is moving and needs a hand.

The seed has been planted, now is your time to grow!

I enjoyed your post. It was very enlightening.

I've always loved the idea of starting this small....yay!

Yes, sometimes small is great to get started and add on from there.

Thanks

I think there's already a service similar to uber/lyft/airbnb for tool trading. I remember seeing it somewhere. I'll have to look and get back to this if anyone is interested

Yes, I have seen something similar, but it is not widespread. It was only in some big cities in California, so there is room in other markets to grow and develop a competitive advantage.
