Sometimes I Feel Generous...

in #money6 years ago

...And I often regret it. I receive a lot of requests for money from really great charities, and sometimes I feel the need to make a donation. I think this is because for most of my life I needed someone to donate to me. I couldn't keep $15 in the bank. Now that I can, it makes me happy...and then it makes me miserable. Let me tell you why.
No matter the charity, once you make a donation you're on their solicitation list for life, and some don't even wait a day to ask for more money.
One summer, my daughter worked raising money for a gay and lesbian rights organization. Eventually, she asked me to donate $25, so she could reach her quota. Of course I gave it to her, because I love her and I am a lesbian, so it was good all around. One week later I started receiving e-mails asking for more money, then phone calls! I was being harassed by the gay and lesbian organization! Sometimes I would get three or four calls a day. Finally, I was so frustrated that I said (or maybe yelled) into the phone, "I'm sorry I donated in the first place!" I never heard from them again.
Of course, it's not just homosexual organizations that are annoying. It seems to be every organization that I have ever given to. Why can't they just say 'thank you' and wait a year to ask for more money, or wait for me to feel generous again?
I needed to get that off my chest. Just so you know, I haven't given up donating to charities, because it still feels good.
