Crypto vs. Metal

in #money5 years ago

If you're here on STEEM, you're probably at least interested in the idea of cryptocurrency as a monetary system. Some are proponents, others are skeptics, but we're all looking for alternatives to legacy fiat money, something that lies outside the realm of political manipulation. Over the past couple decades, we have seen many countries experience currency collapses and economic chaos. Here in the US, many believe the Federal Reserve is a bastion against such upheaval, although I think like most government programs, it is more an instigator than a protector. Having an alternative is always a good thing, even if we continue using government fiat money in day-to-day transactions for now.

That said, it is worth considering older alternatives. Once upon a time, money was metal. There were still problems with debasement, arbitrary exchange rates between commodities that rarely matched market rates, fractional reserve banking policies, and the like, but actual silver and gold coins may still have a place in modern society. Cash is largely anonymous, and governments hate that. At least, they hate it when we mundanes are free to act outside their scope of surveillance. Precious metals are entirely outside the government's banking system now, so it creates a gray market of relative freedom when we use them for face-to-face exchange.

In places with greater economic instability or more overtly authoritarian governments, precious metals can serve as a hedge against bank failures, currency collapses, and police state surveillance all at once while avoiding the problem of electric and internet failure too. It's also more likely to be accepted by older generations who may remember silver coinage.

By all means, let's continue to pursue STEEM, Bitcoin, Monero, and various altcoins. But let's not forget to diversify our assets. Silver may not be an investment per se, but it's a superb hedge, and it's far more accessible than gold in day-to-day trading.

Sort:

I've been stacking silver for over 12 years now and have it strictly as a tiny safety net. It is a superb metal for the extreme ease of finding it and the more affordable nature. Any precious metal is a good item to hold for the long term though. Diversification is the key to a balanced portfolio.

"...something that lies outside the realm of political manipulation."

Now wouldn't that be the holy grail...!

I would like to find that, 'fer sure. Pretty much everything I've ever tried or invested in has been quashed in one way or another by political manipulation; every investment, every enterprise, every effort to live as a free man.

I see the oppression on a daily basis, and probably most frustrating is that most people I attempt to talk to about any of this have their heads in the sand.

Which is all a long, roundabout way to say that I appreciate reading your insights into reality. Thanks for your blog.

@creatr

You don't really notice the chains for what they are until you find the limit. And people will kill you for slipping off those chains if you're caught to the applause of those who are ignorant of, or perversely proud of, their captivity.

The only metal I own is the heavy variety!!!

\m/

Silver and gold are pretty heavy, though. A lot of gravity in those coins compared to modern cupro-nickel alloys.

I do not believe gold or silver will ever be monetary metals again.

Silver's uses for ultra-super-high tech equipment will be so important that some govern-cements will make it a national security level commodity. None will be left for making coins out of.

Gold's uses are piss poor, and we have multiples of the "stated global gold quantity" stored away in vaults. Rots-children have enough gold to suppress the gold price to $20 an ounce, and keep it there for a long time. (banks barred from purchasing) Further gold has fallen so far out of use as a monetary metal that only really old people will remember as a means of exchange.

Plus cryptos are just that much better than gold as money, as a means of exchange.

However, this does not mean there won't be people panning for gold all over America when food shortages / price increases hit.

I am unsettled by the impact of quantum computation on the integrity of all cryptos. It has become my largest concern regarding crypto-viability - even eclipsing banking and government based disruption (although QC may be employed by them for such).

So, which do you feel some kracker would do if they had a quantum computer?

  • Get the pin number on your credit card (3 numbers)
  • Get the private key of your bitcoin addresss (big long chain of numbers/letters)

Further, you really do not have a good idea of what quantum computers do / are capable of.

Basically, as a really basic definition, quantum computers guess at the answer. However, their guesses have a very high likelihood of being correct.
This works well for working out shipping coordination, where small errors aren't even noticed, and there is lots of wiggle room in the outcomes.

quantum computers get worse as the output has to be more specific.
Further, they are even worse when the output would change a lot of the world.
(transferring 1000s of bitcoin from one person to another is fairly traumatic)

Of course all of this would make perfect sense if we actually taught real physics (and metaphysics) in colleges. Instead we teach stupid stuff that isn't based in reality.

Such as, you watch all the time travel movies, where the actors try to go back and time and change history.

The things is you can't change history. ...but now i have to explain what i mean by "you", "change" and "history"

Or an easier thing, lets describe healing from a trauma.
Your father was horribly abusive and so as an adult you had CPTSD, when you heal from this, the way you remember the past will be completely different, in fact, it will be different.

But, without the healing, the past stays as it is. Even if you went back and time and changed things. The outcome would still be the same. You have to change your energy pattern or you will ALWAYS attract the same thing.

As a for instance, time travellers have killed Hitler many, many times.

Good luck with your bitcoin. You will be needing it.
