I love crypto, my girlfriend loves social media. How to match.

in #money8 years ago

Hi, I am Mark from the Netherlands and crypto been a big part of my life for around 4 years now. My girlfriend loves social media.

I talk with my girl about Bitcoin (and lately Ethereum) all the time. (Well basically I talk and she listens). This behaviour doesn't really drive her insane yet but I haven’t been able to plant that seed in her brain that just make you go Wow! Many awesome technology. As a matter of fact I haven’t been able to plant the seed with anybody, accept a good friend, who is like me, that loves new technology and is a bit of a tech nerd (you know the type..).

So yesterday I discovered Steemit (after vaguely hearing about it in the past and discarding it as nonsense. I guess we all been there...If only I had invested…blabla) and it is great. The idea to be able to make money as a provider of content from a social media platform (equal to Reddit) is amazing. In fact I thought it was so awesome that I decided to invest some bitcoin straight away. I also lost money straight away. I made a bad meme to celebrate (My first test post). Bad Luck Brian seemed appropriate.

But here is the thing. I am not a big user of social media at all. I’m writing this now and maybe I’ll write some more in the future, but I think I’m not the user this platform needs. BUT. My girlfriend loves this stuff: Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Snapchat…you name it I bet she’s using it. She spends hours a day writing and reading posts on these platforms. But the most important thing, she has a million other friends that are also using these platforms every day. Reaching her as a new user of Steemit is allot more important than reaching me, because she has the power to draw a hell of a lot more people to the platform than i ever could.

And here it is I need help. I know I wrote I didn’t really drive her insane yet with my crypto talk, but I’m pretty sure that I actually have. I just have this feeling. So. What would be the right approach to introduce her to this platform? Shall I just skip the whole crypto part and call it a new reddit? Shall I mention it is possible to earn real money? Some tips would be very welcome.

I think Steemit is the most accessible new crypto thing I have seen to date and I would love to introduce her to it.

I recently had this conversation with my girlfriend. Like you: I frequently talk to her about Bitcoin, crypto and technologies. She is not the most technically savvy person but I do my best to explain things in terms that can be understood be those that are less technically inclined. It's best to keep things simple at first then provide more elaboration if interest is shown. You could try to start with the following:

Explain that Steemit is a social platform that rewards contributors for good content by paying them based on the reception by other users. The payments are locked into the platform for an extended period of time but can be used to up-vote other content. The value of the payments can fluctuate over time based on the success of the platform. This creates a self-reinforcing cycle where good content writers are incentivized to keep creating content and to up-vote other good content to make the platform a success. In a sense, the users and contributors are all shareholders of Steemit and are beholden to each other to help increase the value of the platform. Steemit works similar to other platforms and demoing it will go a long way to understanding.

Obviously the above does not explain Steem, Steem Power, powering up (or down), and blockchains. These are all much more technical aspects and can be picked up on once a user has gotten a handle on the platform. The important part is that knowledge of these things is not required to get started. A user simply has to sign up and start contributing! This low barrier of entry into the platform is a huge boon and is what will draw people in.

So... don't drive her insane with the technical aspects. Just ease her into the platform and the rest should take care of itself.

I can only tell you guys that there are more of us...

Thank you so much for your comment. I basically used your post to explain what Steemit is to my girlfriend moments ago and now she wants an account to check it out. This is progress! I skipped the blockchain, steem, steem power and all that stuff and went with the route you gave me.

This sounds all too familiar! Unfortunately my boyfriend was so excited that he decided to lay all the technical aspects on me, which was a bit of a mess if i should add! To be honest i still don't completely understand the entire process, but for the last 2 days I've been steeming i have learned so much! Just by simply reading and being apart of discussions within the community.

And it all started with my boyfriend explaining bitcoin to me ....

Great reply coopc! A big +1 from me.

I too was easily able to get my SO and family into steemit by not mentioning all the complexities of blockchain and crypto-functions.

Anyone can understand the tipping system and the rest will unravel. I tend to noticed that once people feel a little more "involved" they will begin to invest a lot more time into research.

Hup holland! goed bezig man! grtz mrgoodlife!

Hup Steemit! dank je voor je bericht. Echt tof dit.

Nice post. I've never been in to crypto OR social media and now I'm obsessed with both!

I love crypto and read about it every day (I guess you can say I’m obsessed as well) but never spend much of my time playing around with social media (I do use Reddit to keep in touch with the latest BTC/Ethereum news, but never post there) The financial reward system Steemit introduced is next lvl in my mind. It’s pretty exciting.

lekkere monies mark !!!!

haha, ik ben echt verbaast mag je best weten.

its dutch @exyle ik ben ook verbaast gisteren 220$ in steem dollar.

Hey @exyle ! Sign her up and have her write an intro post. She will be hooked when she see there can be a financial gain. It is a great platform for all who wish to create great content, tech savy or not :) Best of luck!!

She signed up and she just said she is working on her first post. I cannot believe she is playing around with a crypto project. I couldn’t be happier. I must admit it helped mentioning I earned some dollars with my post and to be honest this part I can’t believe myself atm. I think I got very lucky. It put a smile on my face the whole evening.
