Many people believe that gold at the top of the Monument is a donation from a wealthy merchant from Aceh named Teuku Markam. Although its origins are less clear, some sources say that Teuku Markam was born in Aceh in 1925since the age of 9, he has become an orphan and taken care of by his grandfather named Cut Nyak Putroe.

In his younger days, Teuku Markam had followed military service and he began to be trained as a soldier. He has even been made aide General Gatot Subroto when sent to Bandung. in 1957, Teuku Markam was given the rank of captain by his boss. Soon, he decided to return to his hometown in Banda Aceh and started a business called PT Karkam.

Teuku Markam also stopped being a soldier to run his company. in addition, he also does export-import business such as Toyota cars from Japan, concrete, steel and even weapons. Thanks to his efforts, Teuku Markam became the most wealthy conglomerate in Indonesia at that time and known close to President Soekarno

he has been instrumental in Indonesia's economic development. Unfortunately, over time, the services of Teuku Markam seemed to be forgotten by the Soekarno government. He was once vilified as a member of the PKI and as a corrupt. accusations that throw him into prison without any trial process first

In 1972, he fell ill and had to be treated at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto for two years. Suffering is increasing again when during the New Order government, the property of PT. karkam seized and recognized as state property

As a result Teuku Markam so miserable life in his old age. His children also suffered life, even said one of his children there are suffering from depression. Until the power of the New Order ended, the services of Teuku Markam seemed to be forgotten.
