La cala es de origen sudafricano sus hojas como los rizomas se usan como emplastos para heridas y picaduras y sus hojas en infusión sirven para neutralizar el oxalato de calcio.
Es tóxica por lo que no debe ser ingerida puede producir gastroenteritis y diarrea e irritaciones en la piel.
