We used to build lean-to shelters in "wilderness survival camp" in scouts. It's a lot easier to build shelters using a large, sturdy tree as the support. The way you built it is valid too, just quite a bit harder! So, kudos for giving it a try, and I hope your friend who got severe sunburn is ok... Thanks for sharing!

Well, our only training was watching youtube hahaha. But yes, it seems easier to do it how you said.
