Cryptocurrency is an extremely hot topic in the media. The virtual currencies and their miners have also caused a stir in hardware, by buying large-scale video cards. As a result, stocks became empty and prices were pushed up. This then caused the necessary irritation for anyone who wanted to purchase a new video card. The end of cryptocurrencies is far from clear and the demand for graphics cards is still high. According to a rumor, Nvidia would like to take advantage of the current hype by offering the next generation of GTX 2000 video cards at significantly higher prices.
The upcoming Ampere GPUs are expected to bring a considerable performance gain again, which every gamer and hardware lover can only applaud. Unfortunately, Nvidia also seems likely to be planning to double its suggested retail prices compared to the originally planned prices. This has everything to do with the fact that until the third quarter of 2018 Nvidia will need to build sufficient stock for both miners and other users. This means in practice that the GTX 2080 could cost with an estimated regular retail price of 700 USD, 1500 USD. With this, the lower positioned GTX 2070 does not seem to stay below the 1000 USD limit.
For the time being, this remains a rumor and it is far from certain that Nvidia will introduce such pricing at the introduction. However, it is likely that mining will push prices up again. The introduction of the Ampere GPUs is expected in April or May, with which much can still change. For example, Nvidia would also work on mining video cards with code name Turing.
