It's hard to find a comparable pack to say for sure whether making it myself was cheaper since mine is fairly custom. My guess is this was about 25-50% cheaper than buying a premade battery pack of the same voltage and capacity.

In that case you did great :) I have often thought about making my own little water tower battery. The solar would pump water into a large elevated container. At night the container slowly drains and runs an alternator to provide "battery power".

That'd be a sweet setup! I wonder how much energy a large cistern could supply. You could effectively get a small amount of energy from rain water.

True. I think the higher up your container is the more energy you can store with the same amount of water. of course it takes more energy the higher you need to pump the water. If there is some sort of hill or cliff you have access to then you could use that for elevation.
