Falling Behind Schedule and Deadline Can Adversely Affect Your Mental Health

in #mindset6 years ago (edited)

Hi, fellow Steemians!

The state of your mental health grows increasingly important as you develop and grow in the path of achieving your goals.

There are many factors that contribute to your mental health and its well-being. Motivational mindsets and outlooks can remarkably improve your energy and mood, while decent relationships based on trust, respect and mutual growth can help you reach high and unexpected levels of grace and self-confidence.

But one of the most important and understated factors of mental health is your plans and schedules which can be an indication of your will and determination. If you do not go through with your plans or finish your task before your deadlines, then you will undermine your determination and will to the point of utter redundancy.

Falling behind schedule and hitting your deadlines without finishing your tasks can greatly harm your state of mental well-being. The first and most immediate effect of falling behind schedule is the distortion of the thought process and rise of anxiety.

When you are supposed to do something significant and important in a certain timeframe, it is wise to delicately plan your time and execution, so that you don’t fall behind. Otherwise, that holdup will haunt you from the moment that you hit your deadline to the moment that you finally get it done, constantly nagging you with the idea that you should have done something but didn’t, and the horror that the consequence will hurt your life and career.

Apart from the relentless anxiety, you will lose your belief in your willpower and inner strength to do what must be done.

image2.jpg
img src

Deadlines are a crucial part of our endeavors and trials. Even if you get something done after you hit your deadline, you will not feel emotionally satisfied with your performance.

You might start to feel like the strength that you supposedly had was just an illusion and you were not the person to do that job after all. Your willpower is undermined by your unwillingness to stick to your predetermined schedule, and that in turn will strip you of aspiration, hope, and desire.

Your inner self becomes a slave of your shortcoming in performing your job in the necessitated timeframe. That will rid you of inspiration and motivation to continue in your path, and leaves your mental well-being in a state of shattered emptiness, without the first clue as to how it should cope with such weakness and deficiency.

image1.jpg
img src

Always be mindful of your schedules and deadlines. Force yourself into doing something even if your mind is deceiving you into not doing it because you simply don’t feel like it. Fight off against that sense of procrastination and free yourself of the burden that it will inevitably inflict on your mind.

The opposite is also true. If you stay ahead of your deadlines and finish your tasks way before reaching them, you will inadvertently improve the state of your mental well-being and achieve happiness and contentment with what you are doing.

image4.jpg
img src

It might be difficult to stay ahead of schedule, but by doing so, you will rid yourself of the anxiety and insecurity that always follows procrastination and failure in arrangements.

By eliminating this mistake, you take an effective step towards a more satisfying and rewarding lifestyle.

A BIG HUG!

I can relate this post to my professional side. I work for different client's for different projects and all the projects are handed over for delivery to me with certain deadlines. It's my responsibility to deliver the services as per planned manner and I am expected to finish all tasks within deadline. But sometimes due to unforeseen circumstances or even sometimes by lack of co-operaption by clients, I need to ask for time line extension which makes me feel very bad. I personally tell you that I hate such situations and don't want to face it. If in case I have to which rarest rare like 1 out of 20 projects but still I feel disturbed. Whatever is the reason behind for that but ultimately something wrong happened which caused delay. Being a lead I take the ownership and report it to my manager with full details. Thanks for writing such a nice post @chbartist

Hi @alokkumar121

Perhaps it's best to be able to disconnect ourselfs emotionally at that particular moment? To separate ourselfs from all emotions that follows, whenever we fail meeting deadlines.

What do you think buddy?
Piotr

Hi @crypto.piotr your opinion is also good but being a project lead I don't disconnect myself as someone need to be available for any approach by clients and I don't want client to struggle to find a point of contact for their project related needs. I prefer to bring things to closure even if it's delayed. You may not agree with my way of working dear @crypto.piotr but that's ok because your view is also correct. What you say?

Dear @alokkumar121

Thank you for your mature and wise comment.

being a project lead I don't disconnect myself as someone need to be available for any approach by clients and I don't want client to struggle to find a point of contact for their project related needs

Would you mind telling me more about it? I remember that you're from IT sector. Are you working as a project leader? Something perhaps related to blockchain and crypto?

Just curious :)

You may not agree with my way of working dear @crypto.piotr but that's ok because your view is also correct. What you say?

I honestly think that your view is as good as mine. Why? Because out approaches are very well thought and we're aware of our chocies, our emotions and goal.

Plus to tell you the truth, I'm very open and constantly learning. There is still plenty of room for improvement so reading your feedback has a great value for me.

Piotr

Hi @crypto.piotr yes you're right that i am in IT sector but it's not related to blockchain or Crypto. I handle the IT projects for banking and healthcare sectors and each projects handed over to me for delivery with a deadline. My job is to get it done through my team but sometimes due to unforeseen circumstances things doesn't go as planned. Though its rarest rare but still I don't like that rare too.Talking about your view about It, I appreciate your view and accept that your opinion is truly correct. Though my view is bit different than yours . We both are right and this difference could be because of our ways working. Looking forward to learn a lot from you brother @crypto.piotr Have a great time.

our ways and approaches may be different, but they will work because we're both quite aware.

Right @crypto.piotr I completely agree with you. I like your mature responses and I feel good to read your posts, comments and replying you. Have a great time..

Hi @chbartist

The benefits of deadlines can't be denied. But in my view deadlines are not always good. Deadlines put pressure to achieve our complete something. This reduces efficiency. In my institute we try not to put deadlines to things but this can't be exercised everytime and everywhere. As such it can't be avoided. It's there in nature.

Greatest deadline is death itself.. just to add...

In a way I agree with you. But it's not that deadlines are bad or good. It's more the way we think about deadlines, our approach towards them - this is what matters the most.

If your job is creative then deadlines should be a guide. What do you think?

Ya I agree

Oh yeah. And the hardest part is consistency, making it a habit. But sometimes a reset is needed from time to time is also a factor to get rid of those stresses and negatives and improves boost for more improvements. Like a computer that needs to be reformatted when its getting too full on junks, needs to be detoxified on a regular basis like our life and body as well.

Know that getting the job done is sometimes more important than getting it perfect. Yes, you always want to do your best work, but there are times when it’s more important to complete the job than it is to have it flawless.

Another way you can quickly refresh is to take a short walk to your favorite coffee shop or park, but follow a different route than you normally do. I find that the change of scenery shakes me out of my virtual rut and getting up and away from your desk is always good for your health.

Though some people swear that they are more productive under tight deadline pressure, brain mapping shows that deadlines up your stress level and hamper creative thinking. Don’t leave your task to the last minute when you will be rushed and more likely to make careless errors.

That´s really true everyday @chbartist

Hi @edgarare1

You´re completely right my friend @crypto.piotr .... Always we need something different to clear our mind for a better life or a better result in everything we do...

Our mind says something but we are the boss to our own mind ... We have the decision ....

Our mind is a complete mystery ... So, we are a complete mystery, We should study ourselves to understand how we think actually...!!!

That´s incredible @crypto.piotr ....!!!

It really is incredible :)

Yes, you are absolutely right, that we should do any work while setting our deadline according to our will. And it is also true that if we do any work before the time limit, it is very good for us. We will be a little mentally strong. But we should keep these things in mind that we work with the determination of that time frame.
Thank you

It is very important to set dedlines for any work we do because without this we don't take the work seriously. Personally I always set time limit for any task I do. It helps me a lot to finish the work in time.

As your title is

Falling Behind Schedule and Deadline Can Adversely Affect Your Mental Health

It is true falling behind the schedule really affect mental health. I personally experienced it. When there is too many task to do and also have a work which is on progress then it's is sure we fall behind the schedule. This thing create pressure on us which leads us to little bit depression.

So I always set some extra time period for the task if there is some delay expected.

Hi @ajks

To some degree I think you're right. But what about work that is very ... creative? Or is related to emerging markets, where things are changing rapidly?

It is true falling behind the schedule really affect mental health. I personally experienced it.

We can take care of our mental wellbeing by incorporating some simple daily activities into your daily routine, or making some minor changes in our lifestyle.
We can stay healthy by eating well, having enough rest and exercise, and actively taking care of physical health.

Dear @chbartist sir!
Our plans and programs are a symbol of our strong mind how we accomplish our work. By working through schemes, circumstances are favorable. But there is a need to maintain the balance of life, otherwise these schemes have adverse effects on our brain.we have to complete that task before dead line. Innocence conditions our mind remain fresh.

Good morning

As has been discussed in his last post, everyone owns their time, but there must be a plan to be able to execute things within the established deadlines or that we need.

Diseases of the mind are bad ... very bad ... people who fall and suffer from anxiety suffer a lot ... people with anxiety are insecure, have no control over the things they can and are able to do,
They feel afraid of developing routine activities, which are slowly causing insecurities and traumas that may lead to suffering later Depressions.

A person with anxiety should urgently seek medical help before falling into depression, regain confidence in themselves and live a totally normal life.

In terms of time and in order to avoid falling into anxiety, it is necessary to have a good planning and try to avoid unforeseen events that can deviate from the initial objective and that can cause you to lose the goal.

Regards..

In our childhood we read a proverbs "time and tide wait for none", people who know the importance and value of time the just complete their task before deadline, it just revive him and help to make another goal. People who fail to complete his task before deadline he just fall in trap of mental pressure.
Thank you dear for remind us about the importance of time.

Hello @chbartist . Procrastination is my big enemy. I always postpone doing my tasks and it ends up with stress and being full of remorse.

When one hit the deadline and yet accomplished nothing, he becomes worried and anxious about what would happen and others criticism. Worry and anxiety breed mental torture and emotional stress. It affects the nervous system and produces a hormonal imbalance and makes a person unfocused and irritated and would lead to vices or depression.

Accomplishing the task before the deadline gives one a sense of competence and uplift his self-confidence. Hence, it will contribute to one's better disposition.

Hello @chbartist

This is an interesting topic that explains very well why I often succumb to stress. You have explained very well the reasons why we postponed our tasks until the deadline and its effects. I would like to give some tips, among others that could be listed

  • We must never acquire commitments that can not be fulfilled. We must know to say "NOT!" at the right time.

  • We always have to locate the best place or a pleasant environment to do our activities. This environment should help us to concentrate and free us from distractions.

  • If it is possible to work as a team, tasks and responsibilities should be delegated among its members. If the task should be done alone, you should seek help when necessary.

  • We should visualize how everything will be once the task is completed, including the joy and satisfaction of having achieved it.

Have a happy day before the end of 2018.

Hi @yaleal, Great comment buddy

Hope you had a good time celebrating NY :)
Piotr

Hi Mr. Piotr.
I hope you'll have much success in the new year. Cheers

This falls into the importance of efficiently managing time as falling behind could have the snowball effect of never being able to be on time and achieving goals which could also lead to lack of motivation. It is part of the vicious cycles that occur to keep us from our goals. Invest in yourself by taking these tasks on time to avoid impacting your mental ability to set and achieve goals!

Hi @newageinv

I was wondering what do you think about deadlines when work is related to rapidly emerging markets? Like for instance blockchain?

I see many companies publishing their roadmaps and targets, which sometimes made me wonder: how serious are they?

Cheers
Piotr

I think these deadline need to be softer and adapt to rapidly changing environments and factors. The importance is communication in order to appropriately manage expectations among the stakeholders. Roadmap are important for stakeholders not involved in the “day to day” to determine the appropriate amount of accountability and governance to assign to projects.

@chbartist Our life is fully scheduled only we need to maintain it and maintenance on our hand how we handle it because if we do any work after finishing that work ending then it is useless for us ...No matter how much it is better . we have to finish that before dead line .
"Deadlines are a crucial part of our endeavors and trials. Even if you get something done after you hit your deadline, you will not feel emotionally satisfied with your performance." - I like these lines from your blog , Dead lines in life as exams of school . we have to face them .
@ankitjnv

Programmed goals are necessary for progressive growth in every endeavour. As good as this is , most often I do deliberately refuse to time target tasks because I feels inadequate whenever those deadlines are not met. It is indeed a pathetic disposition which I am striving to wriggle from now.

I m really a type of stay in comfort zone person, so i always end up making a deadline for something and doing nothing. Your posts are a source of motivation push.

Saludos @chbartist! El temor al fracaso es una constante en todo proyecto, y más si no es una tarea cotidiana, por lo cual debemos desarrollar las actitudes de esfuerzo, constancia, perseverancia en cumplir con los objetivos planteados.

The test is that in our quick paced, Web speed culture, we have progressed toward becoming due date arranged and the expenses are genuinely disturbing. In addition to the fact that putting offs an errand until the point when its due date make pressure, specialists discovered it likewise executes cerebrum cells, diminishes imagination, and that the related pressure can debilitatingly affect one's wellbeing.

How about we investigate the effect due date pressure has on the cerebrum. I might want to add that hesitating to meet a due date exacerbates this impact and sets up an extra cycle that causes so much pressure that one stays away from it until the point that they need to finish it. @chbartist

great posting and very great photos

I’ve stopped setting deadlines altogether. Now I focus more on prioritised scheduling of tasks, unless absolutely necessary. I’ve found that I perform better with deadlines only in situations of time crunch (i.e. when I have very less time available for the inevitable).

Posted using Partiko iOS

Interesting @valkyr

Wouldn't you think that mixing deadlines with proritiesed scheduling of tasks could potentially be best solution?

Cheers,
Piotr

I merely said what works for me, not what’s the best solution for everyone. Deadlines have no positive impact on my performance unless there’s a time crunch situation, so that’s exactly when I set deadlines.

Dear @chbartist

Another great piece of work. I love this topic. Personally I'm a very goal orientated person and achieving goals seem to be very important to me.

At the same time I had to learn that it simply does happend, that we can't reach out deadlines. Perhaps it's best to be able to disconnect ourselfs emotionally at that particular moment? And focus only on improving and finding the answer to few questions:

  • was my goal achievable ? why did I fail ? or perhaps: why did I follow unachievable target?

And again: separating ourselfs from emotions seem to be working the best. At least in my case. What do you think about disconnecting yourself emotionally from all feelings that are part of failing?

Very important breakthrough happened once I decided to learn more about organizing time, and the way other people handle their tasks. It build awareness which we all need.
