A Look at Motivation Types

Ever wonder what types of motivations there are? Ever wonder what YOURS is?

A behavioral type of perspective looks at extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation involves doing something for the purposes of getting another thing, or reward. For example, a student might study for a test to get a good grade. On the contrary, a cognitive perspective looks at intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is internal motivation to do something for the sake of doing it. Meaning that the act of a particular thing is motivation in itself, without a reward.
One way intrinsic motivation is viewed is that students want to believe they are doing something for their own will, by their own choice. Students begin to really experience these types of motivations when they are in school and are presented with a multitude of opportunities. As students move from elementary school to high school, intrinsic motivation tends to decline.
People can respond in two ways, to challenging circumstances. The first is mastery orientation, which means they are task-oriented and they concentrate on learning strategies and implementing the process of achievement rather than focusing on the outcome. On the other hand is helpless orientation, which is when people seem trapped by the experience of difficulty and attribute their difficulty as a lack of ability. People with mastery type of motivation look for new ways to think and learn. They often cope and use strategies that have worked for them in past situations. Another issue in motivation includes whether or not the motivation is being used to adopt a mastery, or to complete a performance of some sort. Some people are performance orientated which means that they are focused solely on winning rather than the outcome, and furthermore, they believe that that happiness is a result of winning.
Your mindset, and how you think is very important, and determines the type of motivation you use to your advantage, or disadvantage.

Comment below what type of motivation you have adopted.
