The differences in opinion regarding political parties, freedoms, same sex marriage, equality or immigration are not caused by age, although those born in the computer generation surely have a different perspective. This is dependent on the person however, and not the age.
I was born in 1975, so depending on who you ask and what years they are basing the 'millennial' on, I fell in generation X. There are people I grew up with that had liberal values, and those who did not. It completely depended on the social norms within their areas and within the construct of the family unit, which has been on the decline for some time.
Those who were born in the baby boomer generation were given the benefit of not knowing what the world truly operated like, and even those who read consistently and kept up with the news were limited by the technology that allowed the information to be shared. News, media, internet.... these all developed over time. We humans don't much like change, as much as we like to think we do. We are FORCED to make changes because we see what is not working around us. As we were exposed to new realities, we saw that the world was not as we had been told. Our ‘leaders’ have been glossing over the important details for centuries, as to not ‘disrupt’ the economy. We now know that the US economy is hanging by a thread, and nobody can stop the machine by throwing more fiat money at it.
What is my point then? Okay, let’s just start with the term ‘Snowflake’. The idea that liberals today are delicate and easily bothered, or fragile and easily fooled into becoming a “Social Justice Warrior’. I will just say that a little psychology lesson will show how we project our own insecurities onto others. The conservative viewpoint is to ‘keep things are they are, traditionally’, which fits with our innate desire to have a routine, to know what is coming, so we are not surprised or shocked. This is a fragility in itself, the fear of change is perhaps a better definition of a snowflake.
I WOULD however like to say that I completely sympathize with those conservatives who are opposed to kids wearing masks, burning cars and garbage cans, and trying to save everything and everyone they can. I DO see how that appears to others, and I am right there with them. There are reasons we have a division of ideals, and we cannot just assume that half the people are stupid on either side. We can assume them to be ignorant, but if we are honest, we are all ignorant of how the nation should operate, let alone the world. For an 18 year old liberal kid to tell a 65 year old that his values have always been shit, one can expect to get an earful. It is true that over time as we age we tend to become more stuck in our ways, but we have to remember that we CHOSE which way to think. At one point we were influenced because of things we learned that conflicted with what we wanted to believe.
IF we are honest with ourselves, and that is the key.
I find that the idea of giving equal treatment, freedoms, money or rights to everyone can throw off the balance of a nation. The idea that we are somehow better off with a variety of classes is not a new idea- but one that continues to create much hostility; and the belief that we can all be equal, that we all have the same abilities, and that we are all entitled to the same share is bullshit as well. We EARN our way.
So in a way, yes, a generation was raised differently, and this gave many people more liberal values. But they were NOT only due to entitlement. My parents’ generation was told to work hard, shut up and go with the flow. Don’t make waves. In the 1960’s however, that same generation produced some of the most liberal resistance groups ever to protest in this nation, and it was for the cause of stopping a war that was unnecessary. Right wingers at the time chastised those who protested, calling them traitors, socialists and communists. History has shown us now that those ‘hippies’ were PROTECTING the lives of their own people, to stop a pointless war. They were told to trust the US government, they were told it was necessary, and they were drafted and sent off to die, as in so many other wars.
If protesting forced slave labor for the war machine is somehow included in the SJW analogy, perhaps those who oppose protesting and Left Wing values might see that there are reasons beyond health care, beyond racism, and far beyond entitlements that we ascribe to it. If I as a rational human being can change my mind as I receive new information, I assume anyone can, if they are honest with themselves.
What I am trying to convey here, in essence, is we must stop seeing in black and white. Nobody wants to sit around complaining about being marginalized, or ripped off by their neighbors, but that is what is happening. We can’t close our eyes and assume that racism, sexism, homophobia and drug use are accepted by everyone. We can, however, realize that the decisions a person makes for their own lives should NOT be infringed on if nobody is harmed. That said, many conservatives seem that they support the US government telling us what to put in our bodies, where we can go and what we can say. They support more and more laws to protect themselves, while prohibiting other humans from doing what they are entitled to as a free being. Likewise, many Liberals go the opposite route- wanting to abolish laws they see as faulty, while imposing restrictions on the free market, to stop corruption.
Freedom is freedom. We cannot stop the war machine by screaming at it, and we cannot preserve our freedoms if we are causing other harm.
We may be best to come together and realize that we are all flawed in one way or another. We are all delicate and unsure about ourselves at times, and admitting that is not a weakness. Somewhere between the extremes of political views there is a middle ground. Some would call this ‘wishy-washy’ and tell you that you have to pick a side. This is not a millennial thing, it is across all age groups.
You don’t. Just be a human. Unlearn everything you thought you knew, and accept that many people stick their necks out not to get attention, not always to cause destruction, not always to be right….but to help their fellow man. Some of us are unhappy in life and that is the way it has always been. But we CAN try to minimize that suffering as much as possible, and try not to project our own dissatisfaction onto the world. We only know what we know, and a man alone knows nothing. Contrast brings understanding.
The number of millennials who are “SJW’s” are no greater than the past generations- the difference today is the connectedness we share. There are plenty of liberal minded middle aged Americans, but the older we get the more reluctant we are to tell it like it is, often we keep our opinions to ourselves, but this is not progressive!
We are all snowflakes. Let’s make an igloo.
Very nice article.
I have written an article about millennials that goes against the normal type of articles that are out there.
Would love to get your thoughts on it.
Millennials as Entrepreneurs
Thanks you rock.
