The military represent the extreme end of society and hence it's easier to discern certain characteristics that are common to the whole of society. We all seek approval from authority when we file a tax return or apply for a driving license. It would be easier for a military/police person to 'give it all up' if he/she felt that there was more widespread support for 'voluntarism' or 'consentualism' (as I call it). Military/police types tend to be followers and tend not to be big on moral courage. We have to lead them by example. It'll never happen the other way round ...
