India is a land of ancient civilization. The Indus Civilisation may have had a population of over five million.
India's social, economic, and cultural configurations are the products of a long process of regional expansion. The Indus Valley Civilisation is also named the Harappan civilisation after Harappa, the first of its sites to be excavated in the 1920s, in what was then the Punjab province of British India.

Ashoka the Great, was an Indian emperor of the Maurya Dynasty, who ruled almost all of the Indian subcontinent from c. 268 to 232 BCE.He was the grandson of Chandragupta Maurya, founder of the Maurya dynasty and the builder of one of the largest empires in ancient India.Ashoka is believed to have had five wives. Ashoka ruled for an estimated 36 years and died in 232 BCE.

The Mughal emperors, from the early 16th century to the early 18th century. The Mughal Empire was founded by Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur, a Timurid prince and ruler from Turan or Turkistan. The instability of the empire became evident under his son, Humayun, who was driven out of India and into Persia by rebels.
Akbar, was the third emperor of the Mughal Empire, after Babur and Humayun. He emperor in the year 1556, when he was only 13 years old.
Their power rapidly dwindled during the 18th century and the last of the emperors was deposed in 1857, with the establishment of the British Raj.

It was in the 17th century that the Europeans came to India. This coincided with the disintegration of the Mughal Empire, paving the way for regional states. In the contest for supremacy, the English emerged 'victors'. The Rebellion of 1857-58, which sought to restore Indian supremacy, was crushed; and with the subsequent crowning of Victoria as Empress of India, the incorporation of India into the empire was complete. It was followed by India's struggle for independence, which we got in the year 1947.
