There's a related downside, explored in the prepper community. Many of those bug pills are addictive, in that you get upset if you go cold turkey. In One Second After, William R. Forstchen hinted at the tumult that would occur if all those millions of pill-takers had their supplies suddenly cut off by an SHTF event.

Like in Columbine, Aurora, and some other places. All those people had just stopped the nut medicine and went psychotic. The effect is well documented.
