The first part of your post is just amazing, I loved it...

In my opinion, the lottery is like doing charity but with the faint chance to receive something in return for throwing your money in someone else's pocket and without the community building project behind it.

But who am I to stop some child-like fun? If people have fun by giving away for a little chance of getting much in return...then let'em be.
