Market Friday Give Thanks and Bookstores, Not Necessarily in that Order

in #marketriday5 years ago (edited)

What are you thankful for? At this time of year, it is not uncommon to hear those words at all. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving for those of you who celebrate and may all good things be yours for the taking, not only today but, throughout your life. I know that a feast is being prepared as I write this. Turkey. Pumpkin pie. Cranberry sauce.

I have to wonder if it is about giving thanks any more?

Be thankful. Give thanks. While I have many friends in different places on the divinity circle, I'm honestly not sure who is being thanked anymore. Some thank God, Allah, or even some vaguely familiar entity out there in the universe somewhere. And truly, does it matter? I think not. The very act of feeling thankful makes you feel more positive emotions and is totally contagious!

Be Thankful. Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget
that the highest appreciation is not to utter words,
but to live by them.

#WeInterruptThisMessageToBringYouMarketFriday!!

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!)In keeping with the American Thanksgiving Holiday, I chose to start off giving thanks to my wonderful life, surrounded by amazing people, loving every minute of it and loving you back... an extremely therapeutic experience Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I always look forward to seeing what you send me! It is amazing to see the different markets and cultures of our friends here on steemit. I have been pleasured by all of you, as you send in the most wonderful posts. Going places, doing things, buying merchandise. I have been surprised by many, not being familiar with the culture and I must say that it has been such an educational experience for me in so many ways and I hope for you also. This week I am taking you to a used book store in Old Town Manassas in Virginia. I was in the mountains of West Virginia checking out the local scenery and spotted this store on my way home. I had been here before, but I forgot where it was. How lucky?!

Separador_by_mille1234d80r2bh.png

I have been fortunate to have so many of you posting different markets from all over the world! I cannot tell you how fascinating it has been, sitting here, watching the world parade by. So, yes! I would love to see youra! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace or even an art gallery. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! I promise you! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place. Where else can you take such a quick trip around the globe? Thank you! ❤

Flowers. There must always be flowers to color my world. This picture is dedicated to the #ColorChallenge by @Kalemandra who colors my world every day.

image.png

Beauty is so fleeting...Every eye can see a beautiful face but very few can make out a beautiful mind.

Some of my loveliest memories surround the blooming of flowers, making me feel like I was touched by an angel -soft whispers, out of the gentle stillness, tenderly caressing my heart. Heavenly.

It is a little different than most of the secondhand bookstores that I have been in. This is it. Step right around the corner and you're in!

image.png

I like the way the buildings reflect in the bookstore windows. Oh, yes! How fortunate for me! Sun and shine and sort of reflections. I am all about the reflections.

image.png

Once upon a time hits you right in the face. There is an old Brownie camera sitting on top of a stack of books, vintage posters, Candlestick telephones. I even saw an old singer sewing machine. I never even asked if they were for decoration or for sale, but, I will bet that they were there to set the stage for the books. I really liked the old license plates.

image.png

I must say that there are some very unusual things in here, but, I certainly feel like I stepped back in time. Very much implying that some aspect is similar to something that would have been common sometime in the past. I breathe in the smell of history.

image.png

Old books are everywhere. I love the feel, the touch, the way they smell. I do love my kindle, but, nothing will replace the binding of a book and the words framed in between those pages.

STOP!! BRAIN TEASER AHEAD!!

Question: Two men find an old gold coin and want to have a coin toss with it to decide who gets to keep it. The only problem is the coin is heavier on one side so it comes up heads more than tails.

What is a fair way for the men to toss the coin and decide who gets to keep it?

source

Answer: They toss the coin twice. Each man picks heads or tails on the first coin toss and on the second coin toss they switch. So if you picked heads on the first coin toss you would have tails for the second coin toss. In this way, no one has an advantage over the other.

The entire store is a haven of treasures. Vintage Pepsi crates. I can't remember the last time I saw one and here they use them for bins to put books in. Nice touch!

A plain white ceiling hardly rates a cursory glance. But cover it with richly patterned metal panels, and instantly it becomes an eye-catching feature. As seen here

I have always loved books, they take me on an adventure, to another world, doing things I have never done, seeing things I have never seen.

What is your favorite book of all time?

What kind of books do you like to read?

Tell me! Tell me! Tell me, do!

And just like that, my shopping is done. Until next time! I hope you had fun today! As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to visit and participating in #MarketFriday! The effort put into gathering and putting a post together is appreciated. Thank you for sharing your part of the world with all of us! Happy Friday! Have a wonderful weekend! Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Because of you, I come back to post, again and again, I am encouraged by you, for the time you take to visit, comment or even upvote. For all of these reasons, I am eternally grateful. Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Some days, it is not as easy to see, how wonderful it really is. Kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

I can connect with you in this feeling for books!
My first book was "Nacho Lee", with which my mother taught me to read, I can never forget that smell and the images that made me travel to other worlds. Since then I have read even in secret at night, after my parents say "is enough, turn off the light and go to sleep", then I managed to keep reading.

One of the literary works that I loved is One Hundred years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Magical realism, is a really incredible book
Have a nice day @dswigle

Oh, that sounds awesome! I think all of us readers did the same thing, hiding deep beneath the sheets so the light would not peek out.

The good old days when we were pushed off to bed! Now, there are days where I am begging it to be bedtime. :) Books have always been a part of my life and it used to be such a joyous occasion to get a book for a gift. I had a favorite one that was a DK book about butterflies. Oh, how I loved paging through the beauty of it all.

Thank you for stopping by and saying hello, leaving your words behind.

All your posts are always interesting and exciting.
Who doesn't like books?

I love fiction, especially the works of H. G. Wells.
Since childhood I wanted to have a time machine :-)

And this is my new post for #marketriday

I agree~!! We all love books and I just cannot understand all the stores closing! How sad for me and everyone else. But, thank God for second-hand stores, right?
I want to thank you for always giving me a special post for #MarketFriday and for being so supportive. Thank you! Thank you!

Hello again :)

Yes ! Love those old small bookstores. I wish i had photos of my favorite before the owner passed. It was stacked to the ceiling everywhere. He listened to jazz all day and was the funnest guy to sit and talk with

Oh, he does sound fun!!! That reminds me of the guy who owns this shop. They are characters! Ahhhh. How fortunate we are to know such cool people!

Thanks, Ross! I hope you have a great night!

It was the most unique and unusual place in Seal Beach by far. That little town is nice but sort of stodgy and overly nosey in your business sort of area . He had long grey hair and was very much a beat generation type of guy. i really miss him. I wish i could have asked him more about his life when he was younger

I am thankful for how smooth making thanksgiving dinner went and those I got to spend some time with. It really is the people that make the holiday more than anything else. I’ve been quite blessed this year.

Have a great Thanksgiving. Cheers!

Oh, isn't that the truth! I must say that everything went well for me also and the best part, of course, is the bonding time with family and friends that comes with the holiday. And while I get to spend lots of time with them throughout the year, it is always special during the holidays.

Thank you always and onward towards more Holiday fun!

Beautiful as always! Awesome photography, and I can see why you're all about the reflections - that's a stunning photo! When I saw the old radio, I thought, "Gee, that's all they had for entertainment at home back then."

But then I pictured being alive during that time, and realized that if I was living then, I'd be thinking of how advanced we were to have radios, and also thinking of how bad people had it before then. Could it be a never-ending cycle?

Thank you so much! You always leave such kind and thoughtful words!

As bad as we think they had it, people lived a somewhat simpler, happier existence. They made their own happy, something people have a hard time with nowadays, in my opinion. Moreover, they need to be entertained with some sort of device, be it television, computer or another.

So, I am thinking they might have been the luckier ones.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words behind.

#MarektFriday loves you!

!tip

Ah, your posts are easy to write nice things about, because they really are always gorgeous! I think you must be a professional photographer, because your photos always seem to be so perfectly framed, giving the subject its best possible angle.

I do believe you are right about the happier existence they enjoyed then as they lived their much simpler lives. I was thinking the other day on how drastically the maturation process has changed from the time when I was a child to the ways today's children play and entertain themselves.

We did all of our playing outside, and today, I'd guess they do at least 75% of their playing inside if not more! And I'd bet that whatever they're playing, indoors or out, that damned phone is involved somehow.

I think we need some attention paid to this, because if ignored, what kind of adults are going to come from children raised exclusively on phones, X-boxes and social media?

It's funny that you should say that because that is one of my biggest pet peeves it is how people are raising their children these days. The phone has become the Pinnacle of every child's day, even as young as kindergarteners. I was in the grocery store the other day and there were two children that were whining because their mother would not give them her cell phone. Her cell phone! I can only imagine what my mother would give me if I whined about something like that. Well there is no imagining, because that would never happen.

The ways of the world have changed so much since I was a kid and honestly it wasn't long enough to warrant this type of change. I think that the parents have to take the bulk of the responsibility even though many people point the finger at Society. Ultimately, we are in charge of our children. It depends on what you allow in your house and even though Society May judge them a little bit harshly for being behind oh, there are ways to raise your children in the manner that you find amenable to you. Of course, people will tell you that both husband and wife need to work live in today's world but that is not true. The truth is we have different expectations of how we should live. We have this sense of entitlement that we should have a big house two cars and all the trappings of the good life. Do I not think that we should? I think each person has to judge now they want to live but I can say that I would rather have a life then to work my entire life just to live. Well I'll get off my soapbox now. I hope you have a most wonderful weekend!

That little bookstore looks very rustic and charming. It's been a couple of decades since I last bought second hand books, but someday those are going to be the only books I buy...

Why? Because there has been an Orthographic Agreement in 1990 and it's a big, big mess. After many delays, the books are only being edited according the new rules, who seemed to have been created at random, with no logic or sense.

Since the old books still follow the older but more logical rules, those are the ones I want to read. (It's either that or starting to read in English.)

Thanks for the photos, Denise!

Hehe! Well, brush up on that English, sir! :)

I love secondhand bookstores, mostly because people always pass their books on after having read them. I buy some books while they have been out for less than a month. So, I get a good deal on the book. Of course, I could always get it free from the library.

I was going to look up the Orthographic Agreement and I will later on, but, it sure sounds messy. I always wonder why the government can't leave well enough alone!

Thanks for visiting the challenge and I hope you have a most wonderful weekend!

What a great store for browsing around, Denise. That looks like a fun way to pass time. My favorite books are all about travelers and explorers. I'm not much for fiction, and always want to know about people wandering around in places they have never been before.

As far as this holiday, I call it the football, fighting, and food fest and avoid it as best I can. I always used the week to go on vacation somewhere since my son's school and my offices usually closed then. My son came home from school when he was about 10 and asked me, "Did you know that most people eat a lot of food on Thanksgiving?"

I am grateful every day of my life for the chance to open my eyes and try again, so I do not really need a special day to give thanks. So maybe every day is thanksgiving for me :)

Now, having heard your favorite books, why doesn't that come as a surprise to me? :) It must be that wandering gene that you possess! I still own mine and have been trying to cover the world, one country at a time. :)

My focus has never been on food, but rather the people. Of course, my family was like that too. I suppose that is where I got it from, my mom was a huge family and friends person. Sprint would be proud of her. :) I love that story about your son. LOL

If you read many of my posts, I always refer to having Thanksgiving in my heart. It is the only way to live. xoxo

Love to you! Much appreciation for supporting the challenge and dropping the link!

I love that picture of you in the middle of love :)

And bookstores are some of my favorites. a huge used bookstore in San Diego just closed. I was there for 50 years or longer. So sad. At the same time, I have to admit that I use my kindle to read and that I have gotten into audiobooks a lot. Partly because my eyes get tired and partly because I can listen to a book and still do other work...

OH!!!! How sad is that! :( I do have a kindle, but, it doesn't replace the feel of a binding between my hands. I know many people who use audiobooks in their cars. I actually use that time for quiet and thinking so, that doesn't suit my lifestyle, but, someday, it may.

The picture of me is at an old railway station in Virginia and I was goofing around ! :)

Thank you for stopping by and supporting the challenge!

Outstanding bookstore! Someone dusts often! Love the name too "Prospero's Books". Some magic must go on there.
My favorite genre is magical realism. I remember reading this book "The Milagro Beanfield War" that was the first in a trilogy and loving it. I'll have to find that one again. Second to that are King Arthur tales, and Mary Stewart gets the prize there for her trilogy. But my favorite author of all time is Robertson Davies. Tolkien too. Oh I could go on and on about the books I love.

I do so love bookstores! Secondhand ones even more... surely you have got to love it when you can pass on the love to another. Keep that ball rolling.

When I find a book like "The Milagro Beanfield War" - You have no choice. You must continue the trilogy until there is no more. And then begin again.

Tolkien is king. Truly, truly... and yes. I could go on and on and on! LOL Thank you for stopping by and saying hello and leaving your kind words behind.

Indeed love is all over you @dswigle. I get so excited this day every week simply because l am going to be connected with one of the best friends the steem blockchain has offered me. This is another great post from you like always. The knowledge they say is certainly power. Fill your mind with all these books and make the best out of life. Thanks for bringing this to us @dswigle.

One day my girl my dream will come true. I will own a bookshop like that. The only extra that I will have is my genuine black lounge chair, with an old hand carved standing lamp behind the chair.
Also an old record player, "His Master's Voice" brand with a large bronze speaker at the top of it.
A shop big enough that we can change one half of it into an old style coffee shop where book lovers can sit and read or discuss books.

We already have many books and even a university donated a complete range of classics to me, but the time ids not right yet to settle down.

You have posted another beauty here.
Blessings!

Oh, that is simply Delightful!!! I cannot imagine how fun that would be, especially the old-style coffee shop! Some of the bookshops have that here and it is such a wonderful addition to the scenery here. There is one four doors down from my house on the shore and there is a hook to hang my own cup there. How cool is that? You bring your own cup if you are a local and they wash it and hang it back up for next time!

I loved this idea!

I look forward to the day that you settle down and lead a peaceful existence. :) Until then...

#MarketFriday loves you!

!tip .30

You are certainly a very generous young lady and I will praise our God if we were to have customers at the future bookshop like you.
One can only imagine the stories that will be heard in a small coffee shop and if the ambiance is right it could make many new friends.
I also like the own cup idea and it could really take off this side.
Funny thing is the more that I talk about it, the closer do I feel to it.
One of these days perhaps.
Blessings and thank you once again for your kind generosity!

I know what you mean!!! You can see it happening and so could I! You are just the perfect blend of warmth and reasoning to make a place like that hop.

I love the own cup idea too. She puts them in a dishwasher (or actually people do when they are done and it makes it all easy. There is a tip jar to help with the water bill and soap and I know for a fact that it is always ahead of the game!

I hope you do it!!!

Thank you for the kind words my friend, and also for the advice about the cup idea. The time is not right yet and will have to wait until I get too old to run the charity anymore. It takes a lot of my "hands on" experience and hopefully when that time arrives I would have a younger person to take over from me.
But I am sure that the time will come.
Blessings and love to you!

I agree with you on that one, my friend. Having been involved with nonprofits most of my adult life, it is def a calling as the more you give, the more they need. It is not for the faint of heart, nor a person looking for a job.

That kind of job looks for you.

Stay blessed, my friend and may God put someone in the path. Until then xoxo

Thank you for understanding and at times it can get a bit hellish, but no complaints here my dear friend. One has to answer the calling and work with the heart. So many today see it as a job and they walk away seriously demoralized after a while, but you and I were made of different material and that's why we see it through.
The day that I strike 70 will be it, if I last that long and by then I want everything in place for the handover. Simple, but true!
Blessings also to you!

hi @dswigle. I love books and bookstores too. I thought it only for marketplaces at first. I have a great bookstore I like to visit, so I'll write about that one maybe next week, as I always forget to take pics. Need to get some Xmas gifts, so books again this year. My grandchild love the series books. Her last one was The Babysitter's Club.

No, as you can see from other's posts, we are very liberal what we call a market. If we go to the circus, we pay for the service (or entertainment) so we count it. It is a way of posting different cultures in different places with the things we pay for.

Oh, yes! The babysitter's Club. I didn't care for that series, but my two cousins loved them!!! I am a pretty eclectic reader, but, I do love my bookstores! Glad to hear you do too!

There is nothing like a good used book store. I'm thankful for the indie book stores we have left.

Yes!! We have a good amount of them left here, and I am always perusing my next read. They also always have cool little trinkets to touch and look at.

Le sigh.

Truly sad that books are becoming so obsolete. :(

There is nothing like the old secondhand bookstores, just drop me off and pick me up another day, lol And the smell, so intoxicating the smell of old books. Stories upon stories to tell. Old clocks, antiques that tell of another time, so rich. What a fun market day you had @dswigle! Love this!

Oh!!! Yes!! You are barking up MY tree for sure! I could take an overnight bag with w when I go! I just love the secondhand bookstores, passing on the love, in my opinion.

What is a fair way for the men to toss the coin and decide who gets to keep it?

Obviously, a fist fight.

Or they could get a dremel and slice it in half. :)

Oh, yes!!! Fight! Fight! Fight!

I haven't been to one of those in a dog's age. LOL Let's go with the Dremel. If there is any bleeding involved, we'll call @tattoodjay.

This year I did a significant portion of my shopping in stores and at local craft markets. It’s amazing to see the eyes of a small business owner light up with happiness when you fill a basket with their wares!

Yes!!!! I, too shop local and small owners when possible. If it is only a few dollars difference, I will do it every time.

I am glad to hear others go out of their way to do it also!

Hey Denise how's it going? That book store almost feels like a museum and rich with history. That poster there Harris Dubois Bataan caught my eye. Bataan is a place here in the Philippines where the infamous Bataan Death march occurred.

I saw that. Actually I see it every time I go there. I love these living museums, so to speak. The things they have and the stories they know are amazing.

Thank you so much for stopping by @watersnake101 and do you have bookstores that may be similar near your home in the Philippines? I would love to know that and your favorite book!

Thank you for stopping by!

Unfortunately I haven't bumped into a bookstore like the one you visited there. Most bookstores here are modern corporate type stores which I find boring. That book store you found there is a gem. About books last time I read was years ago. Couldn't find enough time to read anymore which is not good. I mostly read novels from Anne Rice, Michael Crichton deals with sci fi and super natural fiction. Now my daughter reads some of the novels that I have but not Anne Rice as her material often includes erotic themes which is very vivid. Thanks for the tip Denise hope you have a great week ahead.

Happy Thanksgiving to you Denise!

Thank you so much, @lizelle!! Tax time for me is in January, or that is when it starts and must be completed by April 15 or Tax day, a colloquial term for the day on which individual income tax returns are due to be submitted to the federal government.

Your housekeeper fractured her arm!?? Oi!!!

What an enchanting place to visit, we have 2nd hand dealers throughout our village no one bothers to present the old pieces in such a way as to attract customers.

Books have always been something to enjoy, the smell of the ink on pages, no sorry kindle does not have that at all.

Sitting on the bed reading to the children was always the highlight at the end of a day, watching their minds going down a road imagining the words as they spilled out of your mouth, hanging onto the watch the drawings, Oh books how we miss the tangible feel and touch.

!tip

We have many secondhand stores around here and they all dress them up to look inviting which is nice, although, I have sifted through real junk stores and found some treasures.

A kindle will never replace a book, although it does have a place here on earth. I still prefer to hold that book in my hands and reading to the children is one of those places in life that cannot be changed by a kindle, nor should it ever. It lets the imagination run wild, in many different directions.

I want to thank you for stopping by and leaving your always thoughtful comments. I say we go off to the bookstore today!

!tip

Books stores are still popular for atmosphere, bookworms unite!

Yes!!! Agreed!

What a great post filled with many wonders. I try to express my thankfulness year round and remember my blessings. It’s important and healthy to ponder on our many blessings and thank the ones who are blessing us. In my case I thank the Lord as well as my loved ones who are always taking care of my family and I :)

I love the antique look of the bookstore and all of the historical items they have there. That was pretty nice to have a brain teaser included. Is that one you found in the bookstore?
